Fixed in Version1.5.0svn
Summary0012652: Changing the opacity of layers in multi-layered PSD files essentially freezes Scribus
DescriptionIf one tries to change the opacity of a layer in a PSD file via the Extended Image Properties, Scribus begins to crawl if the spin boxes are being clicked and grinds to a halt (i.e., becomes unresponsive) if the mouse wheel is involved. And of course the cooling fan of the computer spins into overdrive.

In 1.4.x there is only a relatively small delay.
Steps To Reproduce1) Import a larger PSD image (about 10 MB) with layers into an image frame.

2) Try to reduce the opacity of one layer

3) Wait

4) Wait a little longer

5) Wait a lot longer (like 30 minutes)

6) Kill Scribus ;)
Additional InformationDon't try this with small sample files. Unfortunately my standard test file is too big (about 10.5 MB) to upload here, but for testing purposes it's possible to create a similar-sized sample file using GIMP or Krita. Just create two layers in either of those with images from your digital camera or a recent smartphone.

Christoph, can you use https://www.wetransfer.com/ and paste the URL so I can d/l your standard test file. I'd like to have it for my testing repertoire. Thanks!

Kunda, why do you always recommend services that require registration or fees? ;)

I've uploaded a 7z archive here: http://workupload.com/file/IlFeZgiT

Get it while it's there, because I don't know how long it'll be available.

Jean, thanks for the patch. At least Scribus doesn't freeze any longer, but it's still awfully slow compared to 1.4.x. Any reasons for this? See, e.g., 12658.

I'm going to present next generation Scribus's graphics editing capabilities next Wednesday at a conference, and my time is limited (30 minutes). Moreover, I'll be surrounded by all the Adobe advertations/advertalks dealing with the glory of CC 2014. I know I can always revert to 1.4.5svn and tell the audience that 1.5.0svn is still in pre-Alpha stage, but I'd rather not, because time is an issue. What works almost flawlessly in 1.4.x should, after the final move to Qt5, work as well, yet it doesn't.

This is no criticism, btw. I only wonder why 1.5.0svn is so much slower in bread-and-butter operations that used to work for years since 1.3.4svn and later, even on very fast hardware.

Cannot confirm that. On Windows, 1.5.x is clearly faster and PSD layer opacity changes are displayed on canvas in less than 1s. In my OpenSuse 13.1 VM, 1.4.x and 1.5.x have about the same speed. Be sure to compare and compile after building in release mode. There can be huge speed difference between debug builds and releases builds.

Jean, I tested this on another computer with a production release. It's still embarrassingly slow.

Cannot confirm. I tested again in several VMs including Ubuntu 14.04 and OpenSuse 13.1. The opacity change can be seen on canvas in less than 1 second.

Jean, could it be possible we are talking about two different issues? If I change the value using the keyboard (i.e., inserting another numerical value), it's fast now. But try using the mouse wheel or clicking on spin boxes. I've tried this on three machines now, and the result is always the same: cooling fans go into overdrive, and it takes ages (ok, several minutes), probably because is calculating the opacity for each percentage point.

I did additional tests on Windows, in OpenSuse 13.1 and Ubuntu 14.04 VMs and with your usage scenario canvas update does not take more than 3s.

I also did additional tests ;)

To further single out the real issue, try to change the opacity with your mouse wheel from, say, 100% to 60% (fast scrolling, as this is what most people will do -- they don't care about numerical values, but they need quick visual feedback). Now compare the difference in speed between 1.4.x and 1.5.x. Could it be that 1.5.0svn takes 0000057:0000040 times ~3s between 100% and 60%? That'd confirm the problem.

1.5.0svn is clearly faster here and 3s was the time going from 100% to 70%.

I got a quite powerfull machine with lots of RAM and allthough usable, this feature is quite slow and makes a lot of faning. When i tested, it took about 25 seconds to go from 100% to 70%, and at this point, scribus faded out, computer faned like mad and 25 seconds later, scribus faded back in... and was arrived at 15% ! (thats because lots of mousewheel inputs were queued during the first part of the work)

Why has the issue been closed? JLuc confirmed my observations!

1) The primary issue ("freeze") described in the issue has been fixed.
2) Secondary issue already subject of issue 0004648, so at best this issue is now a duplicate.
3) Cannot reproduce secondary issue. And be aware I've made tests on an almost 4 year old machine.

I've posted a potential patch for trunk for 0004648 in issue 0004648. Would be happy if someone can test.
