Summary0003254: Update for Short Words French
Description# French short words START here

fr=Dr. ,Dr ,M. ,M ,Mr ,Mr. ,Mme. ,Mme ,Mlle. ,Mlle ,MM ,MM. ,Prof. ,Prof ,
## physics and math
fr= kg, g, km, cm, mm, hl, %, °,
## Misc
fr= €,« , », :, $,
# French short words - THE END
Additional InformationI have removed letters l, s and m from the list in Physics and math because this caused the program to add a non-breaking space before letters followed by apostrophe, which in turn disturbed the justification. l' and s' (and m' to a lesser degree) are so common, this was creating more problems than it solved.

I have added the $ sign.

Please update the Short Words list. Thank you!

I would say there should be also:
 ;, !, ?,

which are the other "ponctuations doubles" in French.

And also ¤,
don't you think?

I preferred to leave that up to the users because I see clearly no consensus among professionals on this issue.

The "Lexique des règles typographiques en usage à l'imprimerie nationale" is mute on this.

The "Manuel de typographie française élémentaire" says if there is no thin space, then use a regular space.

The "Ramat de la typographie" says if there is no thin space available in your software, then put no space.

The typographic section of "Multidictionnaire de la langue française" agrees with Ramat.

It is also interesting to mention that they *all* agree on the need for thin spaces in French typography. And then it is easy to also find lots more documentation that will support these rules, if at all needed! :-)

All this to say I played safe with the spacing of punctuation signs.

It is easy enough for any user to modify the file according to specific needs and the program will keep a "user defined" file so you won't have to bother when there are upgrades.

Just for the sake of it, I personnally formatted my little book and put regular non-breakable spaces before ;, ! and ? ... I still find I cannot confirm this is the way it should be.

What do you think?! I actually have no problem with either proposals. Somewhere down the road we'll get the thin space that will solve the case!

How does thinspace behave when justified? Does it expand proportionally to normal spaces or does it keep its width?
