Summary | 0003354: Rotate pictures in frames
Description | Currently, we can only rotate frames or rotate the path in "Edit shapes". It would be nice to be able to rotate pictures in frames from the properties palette. The ui could provide an additional field as in X, Y, Z and also additional "Basepoint" options.

What advantages would it add to the current approach? |
Assume you have a picture that is slightly slanted. You can, of course, correct the slant in an image editor, but it would be faster to rotate the image in Scribus a few degrees. Also, I can imagine cases, that require rotating a picture in a shape instead of the shape itself to achieve some nice effects. |
I think that the field should be in > Image (because it's within the frame, and not the frame itself) like the scale, for instance. And I can say that I'm needing every week. For instance, see the bottom of page 2 of "Le Tigre" ( eg http://www.le-tigre.net/IMG/pdf/lt003.pdf ) we have 3 frames, with border which have to be horizontal and vertical, and when I import the image, I would win some time if it's at 90° (or 45°, or 2°) to make the rotation in Scribus, instead of opening the image in Gimp and make the rotation, save it, etc. |
Yes. There is a need for such a feature. At the same time we have to acknowledge the fact that every tiny such manipulation on an image will dramatically increase the ripping process. That said, it is up to the user to figure out wether the correction is to be done in Scribus or elsewhere (GIMP for instance). Just as a note: in the OSS world, picking up the right app for a specific task is somehow simpler than in the proprietary world since you can just use the application that better does one thing without asking yourself if you are going to get a licence "only for that". I think the best way to go would be to make the layout in Scribus, rotate the image just like you need it, and in the end of the process call up GIMP to make the final image rotation and update it in Scribus. Maybe it could be done with a script. Or maybe even Scribus could do that before letting the rip do it. In other words, Scribus would act as an image manipulation program. Keep in mind that if many images are going to be rotated by a few degrees to correct lazy scanning for instance, it can affect lots of people that are going to look into that document. Just a few thoughts! |
I have to agree with Louis, rotating an image like this makes for longer RIP times and its 'expensive' in postscript terms. I think its a low priority. |
I disagree with mrdocs: I have to say again that when we're in a hurry (and you're always in a hurry when you make a weekly :) we really need to put the image at the good angle (? translation for x°), and we haven't really time for going to Gimp. In XPress, we used to use that function very often. I understand what you mean about RIP (or I think I'm), but the printers have tremendous computers, and can afford that kind of bigger file. At a certain point, the priority is the quickness better than the intelligence of the file. I mean: it's most important to be able to make our layout correctly than to think to make the smaller file for CTP. I think. |
Ok, I'm convinced. We will see about adding this to the roadmap. |

Hi, of course the feature that could rotate an image inside a shape or polygon is very important and advantageous.. for example, you could have already arranged all the design space with the photo boxes and text flowing around but would need to rotate a bit or less an image WITHOUT changing the whole design already achieved.. so it rotates just the element inside and not all the shape which would even move all the aligned things already placed in the page.. Hope it makes sense since it's a very important feature for serious graphic work really !! Thanks a lot .. |
the issue of needing to go to the GIMP to rotate the image is not so good since you are manipulating the source file (which should always be untouched for any further editing needs) the editing of this sort should be possible inside the desktop publishing software ! |
All agreed here too. Good points! |
This request is related too : 0007915: RFE : group command for frame and image rotation BD |
it's very important been able to rotate the image inside a polygon all inside scribus since sometimes you don't want all the flowing text around a box to be redraw when rotating the box in fact sometimes you need specific grades of rotation of an image inside an already fixed box shape... hope it makes sense.. just imagine that professional DTP programs like QuarkXPress and InDesing already have this feauture (I don't see the reason why the open source community should not deserve such a feature in their only DTP decent software available ... So, best wishes for scribus team trying to get this feature in future releases and many cheeers..!!! |
Raising this again. Considering the enthusiasm and the need, considering the number of duplicates as well, I think this will be a warmly welcomed feature! :) |
It would be very useful feature. |
