Summary0004121: Adobe Illustrator import
DescriptionAlthough Illustrator can produce SVG files you cannot yet import pure illustrator files into Scribus. Now this may not be posible due to copywrite/licensing issues, however I raise it as there are a couple of scripts on the net which perform partial conversion of .ai files to .svg for example on the Inkscape page http://inkscape.org/tools.php

Would it be posible to look into using one of these scripts as a starting point?

.ai files are postscript or pdf based depending on version so please give those importers a try. Let us know of any issues.

Have now had a quick play.
My milage has veried. ranging from a completly ok .ai file that consisted of solid colour, even one where warps have been applied :) . To an error saying the file failed to import. One, a copy of the illustrator 'Cheshire cat' I did as an exersize goes right through stating its building objects and then diplays nothing. It appears that gradients may be partly to blame, and by inference also blends etc.Either the shape fails to import, or oddly the outline imports but the gradient does not. If you then ungroup and select the shape and then select horizontal/vertical gradient from the color palette the correct gradient is displayed. Would it be useful to upload any images?

Ok 4 files uploaded. The first is a set of cubes/dice which have fills and perhaps transparancy (sorry can't remember I don't have a copy of illustrator to hand and thses were done a while back) they import into scribus as wireframe. you can ungroup and then colour them so it looks like the fill info gets lost somewhere.

The second is more complex which is why I have uploaded a pdf of what it should look like. Oddly when I tried this the first time it sort of worked, I had the top of the bulb and wire frame fingers but no fills/gradients and the screw fitting bottom of the bulb was missing completely. I have just tried again and this time nothing was displayed. Odd. The last is an eps of the same image which just managed to kill Scribus stone dead.

One additional 'nice to have' issue is that the current file requester does not have.ai as an option. If this gets cracked then I guess it can be added :)
