Summary0004431: quality loss on CMYK EPS files
DescriptionCMYK EPS files that are inserted on a document via "Get image" exibit noticeable quality loss.

The EPS image doesn't show with the same quality as in the Quark workflow
(light, colour and detail - reflective effect on the left - are lost in the
scribus PDF).

"Collect for output" of the document:

Scribus pdf without colour management:

Scribus pdf with the default colour management:

Pdf from the Quark workflow:

Steps To ReproduceCreate an image frame, issue "get image" on an hi resolution CMYK EPS, produce a PDF, compare with the output of QXP, using the same EPS file.

Scribus is not detecting the color space of this EPS. I suspect partly because the way it is binary encoded.

That said, exporting EPS from Photoshop is not recommended for general image work. In fact, in my testing exporting a PDF would be preferable, as it is easier to detect the color space, as well as preserve true transparency.

Scribus has very good PSD import support, so that or TIFF should be the chosen format when exporting images from Photoshop.

Lastly, using PSD reduces the file size ~ 40%

The loss in quality it due to the fact that EPS files are rendered with Ghostscript into RGB bitmapped images. These will converted back into CMYK when the destination "Printer" is choosen for the PDF. This whole conversion process is responsible for the loss in quality. I will try to improve the detection of Photoshop generated EPS files and use the imagedata directly. This will need some decent parsing of the EPS comments.

Currently the best way to keep the quality is to use the .psd format or .tiff.

Have now made some improvements for that in 1.3.4cvs. Peter, can you please test these?

Franz *much* better - almost perfect match here. What is the possibility to backport this ?

Backporting will be difficult, not very likely that i can do that.

Now, Scribus handles these EPS files natively - no need for Ghostscript in this case. I tested the 134CVS output vs the Quark one and if it is not better, it certainly is equivalent in detail, color correctness and sharpness.
