Summary0008367: File selection dialog is unhelpful for mounted volumes
DescriptionThe file selection dialog makes it difficult to select external volumes and the files on them. In the standard Mac OS file dialog these volumes are listed in a separate pane, together with preferred directories. The Scribus file dialog doesn't do that. The alternative is to go to /Volumes, but clicking Computer in the Scribus file dialog does not show the Volumes directory.

There are workarounds: explicitly setting 'File name:' to '/Volumes' works, and a symbolic link to the desired directory also works, but neither solution is very obvious. More explicit support would nevertheless be helpful.
Steps To ReproduceMount an external volume, for example a memory stick, with an image, and try to import it with
Import|Get Image...

Additional InformationWhy is this important? Well, in my setup I have a small (SSD) volume with only Mac OS and important data, and an external FireWire disk with the bulk of my data, including images.

This is actually for version 1.3.5.1, but that version is not in the list of possibilities.

External storage are visible in places we use system file dialogs. Unfortunately we cannot use those dialogs where we need to do customization.

This affects not only external storage: partitions of the internal hard-disk other then the system partition are also not selectable in the file dialog.

This is awkward if you store all user files on separate partitions: I cannot access any of my files directly from within Scribus without resorting to the workarounds described by the original reporter.

Another Qt application I have installed (QCad 2.0.5.0) does list '/Volumes' in the file dialog and allows me to access all files (on all partitions of the internal hard-disk).

reproduced with Scribus 1.3.6, 1.3.7 on Mac OS X 10.5.8

I just downloaded QCAD and it does not show me the /Volumes entry for me, or a mounted USB key

The QCad build I use is from <http://hans.fugal.net/blog/2008/03/26/qcad-on-leopard/> (I didn't build it myself). It has been built with Qt3 apparently, and there's a diff file mentioned in the blog entry. At first glance nothing in there that seems to relate to the file dialog (listing '/Volumes'). Could it be that it worked with older Qt versions but not with the current one?

Note: I did not tested the demo version offered by <http://www.qcad.org>, only the QCAD Community Edition build from the mentioned site.
