Summary | 0000873: Allow to save document as a first step
Description | I would suggest it’d be possible to save the document in the very first step of its creation. Right now, the save command is not active until you have put an element on the page. The dialog asking for a name to that document could pop-up first. What do you think? So, first, you name and save it. Then, you give it the dimensions and etc.

No other software I know works like that... |
Illustrator 10 and Photoshop 7 do that, at least on their Macintosh flavour. FileMaker does it also. Quark 5 doesn’t but I am not sure about Quark 6. But you’re right, there are not lots of software that have implemented that way to go. I only think it wouldn’t hurt and it might prevent users to lose the first minutes of their work if a crash occurs in the early stages... If you provide no name, the document is created with the default “untitled document“. I have no merit : the idea came because of a crash on error 11 this morning while I was concentrated on the Drop Cap issues! My document had no name yet... |

I'm fine with this but a user shouldn't be forced to save first. Most times I create a document i'm just trying out little something and won't be saving that doc anyway. Also I wouldn't want another pop up there. This could be easily embedded in to the New dialog. |
Agree. You’re not forced to save first. The program only asks for a filename in the New dialog. If you don’t provide one, then the file is created with the heading “untitled #“ or “document #“. If you do type in a name, then you’re on your way with that document’s name. Simple, efficient and not intrusive. |
Just to complete the portrait : QuarkXPress 6.1. does it; InDesign 3 however, doesn’t. |
what i see reasonable is to be able to save before putting any element on the page. not yet possible. the save button is disabled although an action, the page creation, happened. |
With current 1.4.5.svn (19313) and 1.5.0.svn (19314) it is possible to save the document as a first step. Closing. |
