Summary0008812: Suggestion: Implement an Image Frame Control to allow image movement separate from frame
DescriptionThe current method of double clicking an image to move it inside the frame is not intuative, and no indication is given if the frame is going to be moved on the canvas, or if the image is to be moved inside the frame.

I suggest adding a center circle when an image frame is selected. When the user clicks and drags this new center control, the image will be moved inside the frame. When the user clicks and drags anywhere on the image frame (except the center control point), the image frame will be moved on the canvas.
Additional InformationAttached is a screen shot mockup of my suggestion.

I dont think it is working as expected now.
Blue circle appear only after I try to move picture (first I double click on image, but nothing happens) and there is no matter where I click on the image - inside blue circle or outside.
Behaviour is not consistent - I cant get blue circle if image has "fit to frame" selected, but if I click (one click) on it after moving some other picture - blue circle appear (but I cant move image).
This feature works like some new tool, but there is not new tool to pick up and pick tool loose focus.
This is nice feature and I hope will working better soon.

I agree with the diagnostic but I would propose a slightly different approach to this bug.

1. The issue is related to the fact that the Hand Icon is used for 2 different jobs. Move the image inside the frame and move the frame on the page. This is wrong.

2. The solution imo is to use the Hand Icon for only one of the two. Either move content or move container. Not both.

3. I prefer we stick with what most apps do, use the hand to move the content (the image) within the frame. AFAIK, this is the most intuitive.

4. The issue we have with the Circle at the center of the image is where does it go when the image has moved? In the case the image is very large, holding down the mouse button and dragging will always work no matter if the mouse pointer goes out of the image frame. And with the Content Tool you can always put the Hand Icon wherever you want on the image to place it elsewhere.

5. One other issue is it displays a new icon no-one is used to and this can lead to confusion too.

6. I really disagree with the decision to use the Hand Icon for moving the frame itself around. The pointer (the arrow) did the job quite well. Maybe we want to improve that arrow as to make it different when it is over an active frame. But not the same Icon for 2 different Tools.

Where I'm getting the circle idea is from FotoFusion, a very popular software for album design. Since it's primary focus is fast layout and adjustment of images, much thought has gone into the interface.

By removing the double-click step, speed and ease of use is improved.

I agree we need fast and accurate ways of manipulating images, position them, crop them, resize them, etc.

The issue with the double-clicking is much related to the fact that the Select tool seems to be the default tool. Once the user imports and image, it has to be questionned why Scribus falls back on the Select tool instead of the Content tool... There shouldn’t be any need for double-clicking on a freshly imported image. It should only sit there, waiting to be edited with the Content tool or through the Properties Palette.

In my opinion, the best way to move a picture within its frame is dragging it with for example Alt key or dragging using the right click of the mouse.
