Summary0008883: Column break is adding an unexpected blank space at the top of the next column
DescriptionThere is a bug in the behaviour of the column break. We don’t expect this break to introduce a blank line on top of the next column.

This makes the column break unusable in many if not all cases.
Steps To Reproduce1) Create a text frame

2) Put 2 paragraphs of sample text

3) Notice that there is no space between those 2 paragraphs in the text frame.

4) Set the frame to 2 columns with any gap you wish

5) Select the Edit Content Tool and go to Insert > Space > Column Break between the 2 paragraphs

6) The 2nd paragraph will jump on the next column [expected]

7) The 2nd paragraph will not hang on top of the 2nd column, there is actually a blank of a line in front of it. [unexpected]

Hmmm seems perfectly logical to me. Inserting a column break will certainly not remove a paragraph separator.

Logical isn't always intuitive ;)

Further testing reveals that the issue occurs only when you place the cursor at the end of one paragraph, in order to push the following one to the next column. When you place the cursor on the first line of the paragraph you are pushing, then there is no additional space.

Just tested, Indesign behavior is identical : if you insert column break before paragraph separator, you will have that additional blank line, if you insert it after you won't have it.

ID behavior is not identical : consider your paragraph being set to justify alignment, in Scribus, the last line of the previous paragraph will be "forced justify" and this is not the case in ID. Hypothesis : The invisible caracter in Scribus is handled as a true caracter.

Ok. Tested with QXP and ID and the behavior seems consistent throughout those apps, including Scribus. You only have to place your cursor on the right line when you need a column jump. I have no real issues with this, in the end.

So, in appearance, there is no bug.

However, this non-bug made us discover that Scribus force justifies the last line of the paragraph before the column break whereas ID and QXP don’t do that. We don’t really expect what’s happening in Scribus, do we?

So we need to submit a new bug and close this one?

No, however this issue is a direct consequence of 0005366, fixing it will fix this issue. So no need to submit a new bug.
