Summary0009510: Cannot embed fonts with over 2048 glyphs renders Scribus unusable for many languages
DescriptionWhen exporting to PDF the only options are to embed or outline fonts. If a font contains over 2048 glyphs Scribus hard coded to permit only outlining. Therefore, the resulting PDF is not searchable. This is not a serious problem if the purpose of the PDF is for a commercial press. If the PDF is for students or the general public, and especially if it has many pages, it is useless. This affects documents created for scientific papers where many special glyphs are needed, and many languages, particularly Asian languages.

I understand the purpose of the limit is to create smaller PDFs. But a large PDF is better than an unusable PDF.
Additional InformationA relatively simple solution would be to change the glyph limit from 2048 to a number that is user configurable. Leave 2048 as the default, but give the user an option to make it larger in File > Preferences > Fonts.

I should have added that OOo, InDesign, and MS Office have no problem embedding or subsetting fonts regardless of how many glyphs they contain.

Duplicate of 0009478 and other issues. You can disable subsetting for a specific font in preference > fonts by unchecking the subset checkbox. Unckecking that option for OTF fonts must be avoided. Scribus may output also much bigger files with that option disabled.
