Summary0010581: Checkbox to toggle prepress option (last tab of export to PDF dialog)
DescriptionThe 'pre presse' is the last tab of the export to PDF dialog.
It proposes lots of inputs for crop marks and bleeds.

The request is to add a chief checkbox at the beginning of this tab : "enable prepress".

It would behave in the same way as the "Cypher" chief checkbox at the top of the protection tab.
That is :
when checked, all inputs in pane become active;
when not checked, all inputs become grayed out and inactive, but do remember their previous values, so as to be ready to propose it as soon as the "enable prepress" checkbox is checked again.

Yes. Good idea.

probably, the check box should be labeled "enable marks" (or similar) and not "enable pre-press"...

and what about defining in the preferences, which of the checkboxes are enabled when checking "enable pre-press"?

Good point. It brings me to further thoughts.

PDF/X-3 field should not be in that Prepress panel but in the first panel where you can select PDF Compatibility. Selecting PDF/X-3 in the first panel doesn’t pop-up the prepress panel however it is important that the user knows there is more to PDF/X-3 than just selecting the option in the General panel. We only want to avoid mistakes here.

I think it it's a good idea to have a master checkbox for print marks so that you don’t have to check things over and over. It's a plus. Not a necessity.

However there is one settings that is, to my knowledge, not available in numerous DTP applications, including Scribus: the ability to set the length of the crop marks. We can set the offset, which is good. What about the length? Printing is making the best use of the paper sheet and it is not seldom to see on an imposed job crop marks as tiny as dots on the sheet. The printer knows the price of paper and will in fact always use the smallest possible size to accomodate any given job. The postpress operator doesn’t need 10 or more millimeters crop marks to set the guillotine to achieve a perfect finishing cut. Adding this field would certainly help many users deal with tight paper sizes and make the most out of the sheet.

Do you think I should create another RFE for that particular field?

Generally speaking having different requests in one bug makes it more difficult to follow the work being done or not done so i tbink it would be better when your proposal is on a different request.

PS : The aim of the checkbox i propose on this page is to avoid having to type in all the different settings so as to issue a press PDF and then having to delete them all so as to have a nice screen one and having to type them all again when having to recreate the press PDF etc

Firstly, I concur with JLuc. Does Mantis support splitting out louisdesjardins' second note to a new issue?

Secondly, I'd like to try my hand at implementing it in 1.4 (or can't it get into 1.4.x because it's a feature?),
so please leave a note here if you're already working on it.

Hi mabri,
I will post a distinct RFE for crop marks.
That's the way to go!
Cheers!

The RFE already exists!

Hi louisdesjardins,

please also separate the second paragraph of your long note into a new RFE if that doesn't exist already (thanks for searching).
I'm still interested in posting a patch for the main (in ale's words, "enable marks") issue here today, but I think I should do it during the day.

I have really begun only this evening, sorry that it took so long.
My patch is attached, but alas, I've not been able to get the initial state
of the "Enable marks" button right (despite trying to use loops, which was a last resort for now).
With disabled marks the document's bleed setting should be used now, not any in the PDF export dialog (sorry that this is still untested).

I have attached a simple patch to this ( tabpdfoptions2 ), I added a new checkbox to do the requested feature.

2012-03-15 22:28

reporter   ~0027821

Hi iampartha,

I tested your patch, the new checkbox is unchecked by default, but the two groupboxes it should control are enabled, as with my patch.
More importantly, if I check "crop marks" and "bleed marks" and then save the PDF,
the marks appear in the output. On reopening the dialog, it is as before,
but after clicking twice in the checkbox (disabling the groupboxes) and then saving,
the marks still appear in the PDF even though the checkbox was unchecked.
So, assuming I understand the issue correctly (if the checkbox is unchecked,
no marks should be put in the output PDF), your taboptionpatch2 of 02:40 today doesn't suffice.

With "the checkbox" I mean your new one, iampartha.
IIRC, with my patch that works (no marks in the PDF
if the "enable marks" checkbox is unchecked and the groupboxes are disabled).

hello Prokrammer Iampartha

i tested your patch and met problems

* the .diff files refers the file in a a/ and a b/ folder that dont exist PLUS it refers the file in Scribus/ (for example : a/Scribus/scribus/tabpdfoptions.h)
but to apply it with rabbitsvn it has to be referenced directly in subfolder : scribus/
Maybe there is a way to use your .diff file as is, but i dont know which, so i had to edit your patch before applying it;
Could you try to produce a .diff file with files refered as scribus/tabpdfoptions.h for example ?
I think it is good practice too to give your patch a .diff extension so as to keep it clear even when the file is copied in some mixed files folder.

* the checkbox appears ok in the prepress pane, good, but

-- when first opened, all the marks options are activated, and so the checkbox should be checked. With your patch now it is not : this is not consistent. One has to check twice to get both checkbox checked and options actives.
But AMOF, as for usability, i think it would be better for the prepress options NOT to be activated when first launched : so the good UI would be to keep the checkbox unchecked first, AND the 2 groupboxes disabled.

-- if I disable prepress, create the PDF, and wants to create the pre press again, the prepress is not disabled anymore : i have to disable it again. This option should be remembered as are all others PDF creation options, and as is the cyphering checkbox in the protection option pane.

-- both disabled or enabled, the produced PDF features the cropmarks and prepress marks.
When the checkbox is unchecked and when the options are disabled, the PDF should not include cropmarks bleeds etc

the aim is to be able to disable and reenable prepress values without having to delete or re-type in, each time, each of the 4, 5, 6 values that are required in this form.

There is a workaround that requires only a couple of clicks :
- set the bleeds in the document preferences to config_one values
- when exporting for first set of PDFs, check "use document preferences for bleeds" -> config_one values will be used
- OR uncheck "use document preferences for bleeds" option, and change the settings to fit config_two. This config_two bleeds will only need to be set once, since they are then remembered.

Other checkboxes like "use guide marks" have to be edited each time when switching from main to alternative PDFs.
When config_two for guide marks has to be "no guide marks", then its enough to uncheck that option. etc fot each checkbox.
Their related values (length or guide marks or offset of control marks) are remembered which mean there is a limited config abilities ; one with, the other without. That's probably one of the most frequent requirement.

That's an alternative but it is kind of awkward because
- "document options" are setup very far away in a distant dialog window.
- some options are grouped together (bleeds) making it easy to switch from config_one to config_two, but there is no way to switch globaly for other options and it requires to change one after the other each options that has to be changed
- there can be maximum 2 set of partial configs (for bleeds only) : document preferences, PDF export dialog values (which btw is also stored part of the SLA).
