Summary | 0012510: Keep SLA and PDF sync
Description | Various options would make the SLA/PDF sync more robust. It should achieve 2 results : - last saved SLA enables to produce the last produced PDF - filedate (SLA) < filedate (PDF) would be a safe hint Various solutions would help insuring this : - In the preflight checker, a new warning could warn when the SLA is not saved. - There could be a general preference : always automatically save before exporting to PDF - Or there could be a "Save before exporting" checkbox option in the Export2PDF dialog.

Q : Why this request ? A : when this request is satisfied, quality procedure could be : always insure that PDF is more recent than SLA, that would ensure that PDF is realy issued of last version. ATM PDF export settings change the doc so it has to be saved AFTER again the export : i usually have to 1) export 2) save 3) re-export immediately This quality criterium can later be checked visualy in the file manager or in a script when working on multiple files, so as to ensure that no edit has been done after exporting to PDF and ensure that all text or layout edits have actually reached the PDFs. As for now, all i can do is save + export + resave truely + re-export truely and then a script has something to chew. That's because first export changes the doc when PDF settings are changed, so it as to be saved again and then it has to be exported again so as to have PDF more recent than SLA. |
as discussed on irc, i'd prefer scribus to simply record the last time it has been exported and -- eventually -- whether it has been edited since the last export (storing the pdf settings not included). |
Expected result is to enable a user's procedure to ensure that PDF is sync with SLA. As a consequence, expected is to : - also have the PDF setting changes saved in the SLA - ensure that all edits have made their way into the PDF + provide a simple way to detect it in a script. - in case some edits have not made their wat into the PDF, rise a warning of some sort in scribus. Having 2 new "last export time" and "last edit time" attributes in the document structure is an other way than looking at the SLA and PDF filedates, but how would these be used in scribus UI and workflow ? |
there is one thing i'm wondering: is the user expecting the file to be changed after she has produced a PDF? is there a case where you save a SLA, produce a PDF and do not want to be still in the saved status? depending on the answers to these questions, we could simply always automatically save the document when the PDF export is used on a saved file... |
Since I am a fairly new user to Scribus I'd like to tell ale I do/did /not/ expect the SLA to change when I export a PDF. Why should it change after all when I just do an export? I already wondered some times why Scribus reported I still had changes I didn't save and then wondered if I really exported the latest edits… |
I can't think of a real usecase where saving before exporting would be an issue. |
... so, if the pdf exporter got a clean document, the simple solution would be to silently save the "pdf" related changes before doing the real export... |
Jluc, the pdf opts are saved into the doc already... |
