Summary | 0012974: Add a "Save doc with new export setttings" button to PDF export dialog
Description | When exporting to PDF and changing some settings, there is no correct way to record the new settings. Only way is to export to PDF (dont press Cancel !) and then later on, save the document. Since these PDF export settings are recorded in the SLA document itself, request is to add a "Save document with new export settings" button so as to easily save the bew settings and go on proceeding with whatever work is undergone. It would help ensure that SLA is allways synchronised with PDF.

Erm.. use Doc setup instead of pdf export? |
|
That's an idea :-) But most of the time i first believe that the setup is ok, and i dont want to change it so wont go to document setup. But too many time in such a case, i discover that i forgot something or have to change something. An alternative to "save doc with new settings" button would be "save doc and export to PDF" |
|
I've tryed that new idea in real situations where i needed it but it doesnt appear as a practical alternative, since accessing the PDF settings requires to : 1- Clic "File" entry in main menu 2- Drag mouse to "Document preferences", release mouse button 3- Search "PDF settings" in the long left settings menu, click that option before accessing the wished edit. In my workflow, I am about to create pdf. So i click "Export to PDF". PDF export dialog opens. Settings are probably OK but i want to check them. I notice that one setting has to be changed. I change it. At this point, there is no way to save the changed doc but to create the PDF first. When i later save the SLA, the PDF becomes older than the SLA, which is a sure sign, during later work, that the PDF should be re-exported so as to be sure it is synced with the lasted version of the SLA.... So as to avoid that later hassle, i usualy prefer to immediately export to PDF once again, so as to "touch" the PDF. A "Save doc with new settings" button would in the PDF export dialog would improve the workflow. |

Better than a "Save doc with new PDF settings" button, a "First save document with new settings" checkbox close to the "Export" button. |
|
Well you could set a keyboard shortcut for Doc Setup.. get Ale to review this please.. |

since the user might want to produce a pdf without saving the .sla, i don't think it's a good idea to simply do an automatic save. (i never did it in scribus, but i do such things in inkscape and gimp when exporting multiple variants of a file) my suggestion is: - automatically save the document, if the options have changed and the document was in a saved state before calling the PDF export dialog. - record the export settings change in the actions list if the document was dirty (no idea if this is already done). - make the setting changes undoable in both cases. (i'm not 100% sure about 2 and 3... we might be showing too much of the internal behavior...) i prefer not to have a new button in the pdf export dialog or a menu entry. if we really can't come up with a good solution, one that is good enough for (almost) all cases, we could think of a preference that tells scribus to save or not the document when producing a pdf from a saved .sla. the current situation, where the user is left with a dirty document is indeed not a good one. the proposed behavior (automatically saving non-dirty documents) should probably also be used for all document changes that are not actively triggered by the user (i guess that changing the current page is one of them). with a preference for turning this kind of auto-saving off, if the user has an issue with it. |

craig : there is a general good practice that says : provide only ONE way to one service. Provide a unique url for a page. Provide a unique storage place for a variable or config data. AMOF, It's very troubling to have to go trhough Files > Preferences to save the PDF export fonts management options, when going straight to PDF export enables to simple manage these options in all their aspect... except the ability to save them. |
