Summary0012999: PDF export ignores overprint setting
DescriptionScribus ignores overprint settings of yellow when exporting to a PDF.
Steps To ReproduceOpen the attached sla file, export to PDF 1.4 (colour: printer) and view it in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader overprint preview. Both yellow fields stay yellow, but the right field should be green, since it was built as overprinting.

Acrobat says it is CMYK 0:0:100:0, which means: knocked out.
Additional InformationPrinting the file to FreePDF makes a correct overprinted right field in green, so I think it is a problem of the PDF export.

I cannot reproduce your issue. I've got Acrobat X and Acrobat Reader X displaying the overprinted square as green as expected. In case this may help you, Acrobat Reader use overprint preview only with PDF/X by default. You can change the default so as to enable overprint preview for all PDF versions in Acrobat display preferences.

Hello jghali,

here you get the PDF out of my system and what Acrobat 8 says about the output.

Your PDF shows the overprinted square as green as expected:
- in Acrobat Reader 7 provided overprint preview is enabled in prefs
- in Acrobat Reader X provided overprint preview is enabled in prefs for all PDF versions
- in Acrobat X Pro if overprint preview is enabled for all PDF versions or in Output Preview mode if overprint preview is enabled in the dialog.

According to your screenshot, Acrobat 8 does not seem to have that overprint preview button Acrobat X has in its Output Preview dialog. So I suspect the activation of overprint preview in Acrobat 8 depends on display preferences and PDF version. So please check Acrobat display preferences and set use of overprint preview option to "always" or "automatically".

Overprint preview is activated in Reader 8 and Acrobat 8, and other PDF files with overprinting are displayed correctly (same file, not exported by Scribus but printed via FreePDF shows green). So the function is on. And: the Acrobat output preview says the same (only 100% yellow).

When I export as PDF 1.3, I get the same error, no green, in both programs.

Could you upload the FreePDF output so I can look how FreePDF does it? From my tests, it looks like an Acrobat 8 issue. In all other versions, the overprinted square is displayed green.

Confirming this is a bug a Acrobat 8. It fails to use "extended graphic state" resources at the top of the page tree, resources which contains the overprinting information:
- this is a failure to respect point 3.7.2 of PDF 1.7 specifications : "(Since a page’s Resources attribute is inheritable, as described under “Inheritance of Page Attributes” on page 149, it may actually reside in some ancestor node of the page object.)
- this is a regression vs Acrobat 7 which was fixed in Acrobat 9.

[Edit] : the same wording exists also in point 3.7.2 of PDF 1.3 and PDF 1.4 specs.

Ha! Adobe ignored its own standards?
So if I don't want to buy a newer Acrobat, I could simply ignore the wrong values?
Thank you!

jghali, then we should bill this as a known issue to avoid future reports?

Closing as the problem originates from Acrobat 8.
