Summary0013841: Autosave Dialog text that helps orient the user better
DescriptionThis ticket has been edited and separate issues have been split off.

Main issue:

Misunderstanding and insecurity with the UI arises from lack of description and hint bubbles. Description and hints would improve the usability. Description would be a global introduction to the dialog. And hints on each UI item : column headers and buttons.

- When I click 'Abort' scribus launches but opens on a void screen. It should propose the usual multi-tab open-or-create-file dialog. fixed in r21120 see (0013866)

============================================================================
Previous noted issues were :

Today the crash recovery dialog poped up when launching scribus.
It showed 4 files to recover.

1) [NOT REPRODUCED] All documents were shown to be named 'Document' but i have no document with that name. AMOF it seems this happens only when document is really named such

2) All were shown to have been edited today 18h30, but i have not used scribus today yet. It's the first time i launch scribus.

3) All were shown to be "autosave" type. Is that collumn of any use if all shown document are of "autosave" type ?

4) When I click 'Abort' scribus launches but opens on a void screen. It should propose the usual multi-tab open-or-create-file dialog.

5) This is not as critical : Explanation in the dialog proposes to recover these documents but its not clear enough :

- - in case i click "yes i want recovery", i'm afraid that the recovery will overwrite existing document, because i've not lost any document afaik. Is that a real risk ?

- - but could it be i have really lost some document and i dont know it ? in case i choose to not recover any of these document right now, will scribus later propose me again to recover these lost documents ? I guess that's the purpose of the "Remove" button. When i choose to *not* click 'remove', then there is a good chance that these recovery files will be proposed to me next time I launch scribus.

6) [EDIT] the next day, when i open scribus, not 4 recevorable documents are proposed, but around 24, all named "Document". In between i have allmost NOT used scribus and i have NOT crashed at all. Where do all these document come from ?

Additional InformationProposed changes go here:
Lets explain what people are looking at when they see this dialog. For example autosave vs. emergency files:
Autosaved files are files are automatically saved versions of a document that was opened in a previous Scribus session.
Emergency files are files that Scribus was able to salvage after a crash.

Where do all these document come from ?

I'm running r21098

I'll compile r21106 so as to get franz newest patches about file recovery.

So i removed all recovery files. But today when opening scribus
- once more 4 documents were proposed to be recovered when i had no awareness of a recent crash
- the names where not "Document 1" but some existing filename
- I could recover each of them and none was deleted so my fear did not meet reality (but scribus should display enough hints so the user knows what happens and is not afraid)

Nothing new for the other points

Oh i now understand the "autosave" in type column : these file are not "crash" recovery, but plain normal "autosave" versions. A short dialog introduction or a hint on hovering the column header would help.

So globaly only remaining issues are :
- When I click 'Abort' scribus launches but opens on a void screen. It should propose the usual multi-tab open-or-create-file dialog.

- Misunderstanding and unconfidency arise from lack of description and hints. Soms description and hints would improve the usability.

Possible descriptions:
Autosaved files are files are automatically saved versions of a document that was opened in a previous Scribus session.
Emergency files are files that Scribus was able to salvage after a crash.

Franz commmitted first fix in r21120 so now Open New File dialog is triggered after Abort is pressed.

I've split off the New File Dialog fix to 0013866 and closed it. This was we can bring more order to this ticket.

... if it's fast enough, storing a png of the current page (and somehow showing it) could often be helpful...

ale, yes, i like that idea! Makes the dialog more robust and gives the user a better option to make an informed decision.
