Summary | 0014078: Templating for text frames
Description | Hi! In our church paper we use single column frames along with two-column-frames. For the latter you always have to specify the number and the distance of the columns. Other fixed elements follow a style guideline which has to be applied each time. Yes, you can put samples outside the page area and copy them - but that ends up quite unorganized, collides with objects you move around and in larger documents you have to scroll a lot. Yes, you can use a library, but that's not saved within the document. So, I think it would be nice to be able to define format templates for text frames - configure a frame, save it's properties into a template (which is saved in the document) and be able to apply that template to other text frames. Kind regards, Andreas Müller

I may be misunderstanding but perhaps the functionality you're looking for is in the Scrapbook ? |
Not really. I use the German version where this feature is called "Bibliothek", which translates as "library" - so I wrote "library" in my original post. Now I've learned something! But at least as far as I can see this scrapbook is not saved with the document, not even linked to it. This can be problematic in a distributed production environment like ours, at least as soon as someone starts experimenting, if only in a test document. This is why I like the thought of document-specific (and document-stored) templates at least for text frames. |
Hi Andreas! Idea: - Make one document, place onto the frames. - Save document. - Open this document new tab. - Use it as a template. (CTRL+C; CTRL+V) |

Or "Mac Gyver starts using Scribus"... :-) Sorry, no, that's too complicated - especially when working in a team. In that case using the scrapbook or putting the element outside of the page would be the better idea - but that has the drawbacks I described above. |
Andreas, I hear you. It's not ideal and it's not a practical solution. But since this is all voluntary it means that someone needs to volunteer to make this happen. Or 'rally the troops' to make it happen. |
Dear Kunda, if I gave the impression that I wanted to press things, I'm sorry, that's really not the case. All I'm hoping for is that somebody says, "That's a great idea for a future release, let's do it sometime". That's why I wrote "it would be nice". I know you do all this on a voluntary basis, which makes your work the more admirable. I think Scribus is a wonderful product - thank you! |
