Summary | 0001424: Manual kerning of letters at beginning and end of paragraph...
Description | Hi. Often, I'll want to kern letters at the beginning or end of a paragraph, to either put a tiny extra space or remove some (when it's not practical to change the position of the text-block, since I don't want other paragraphs to move, for example). Currently, I can accomplish this by putting in a fake "space" character at the beginning or end of the paragraph and then kerning in relationship to it. It would be nice to be able to handle this properly, without the fake space workaround. Just for comparison, it is possible in the big-name DTP apps. Thanks! :)

Just tested with Quark 5, Quark 6.5 and InDesign CS. I was unable to reproduce this unless I put the extra *fake* space in front of the paragraph. Kerning can be applied between any two glyphs, including spaces. What's wrong? Actually, Quark handles the case to the extent of even making the letter disappear to the edge of the text box where InDesign doesn't. Scribus does it mostly like Quark with the limit of a -50 value in the kern field. Passed that value, the first letter reappears in the text frame. I wonder what could be done to make that work better? Works fine to me. Can you explain? |

Quote : "Just for comparison, it is possible in the big-name DTP apps." I must be missing something: this is not possible in Quark and InDesign as I reported. I can't think of other *big-name* DTP apps... I still "wonder what could be done to make that work better? Works fine to me." Can the original reporter be more specific? How can this "bug" be "acknowledged"? |
