Summary0001581: Printing to postscript fails with large resolution photograph on page
DescriptionI'm using a postscript level 2 printer (HP LaserJet 4MP) and scribus 1.2RC1 build 17 under X11 on Mac OS X 10.3.5, trying to print out a book of hymns. The book includes an introduction page, and if I include a photograph of myself on that page, that page will not print, giving the following error:

ERROR: undefined
OFFENDING COMMAND: filter
STACK:

/FlateDecode

/Decode

/BitsPerComponent

Now, I also noticed that that page will refuse to print from Adobe Reader after conversion to PDF, and that scribus defaults to Postscript level 3 but that if the photo is on the page, the page will not print unless the photo is not there, even if I select Postscript Level 2 output in scribus.
Steps To ReproducePlace photo on page. Pull contour line out a bit from side for text-wrapping purposes. Add text in column form. Drop text to back of page stack. Set text wrap. Print.
Additional InformationAll other pages have fairly complex EPS graphic files on them (mostly sheet music with everything defined as curves instead of text). They all print just fine.

I have noticed that scribus does take quite a while to print to postscript, as though the postscript output might welcome optimization, but the actual prints are just fineā€”if the page does print, that is.

If need be, I can send the graphics files along (they are apparently only linked to by the scribus file, as it is only around 84kB. The problem page is page two.

We really need this tested against a new version, and/or the images supplied. Without that I'll have to close this as 'cannot duplicate' in a little while.

Having output a postscript file, as I recall, the output was 24 megabytes, while my printer only has 6 megabytes of RAM. I am sure that the problem is simply too large an image for my postscript printer to fit into its RAM. Unfortunately, this printer is about 10 years old and uses proprietary RAM modules, so upgrading the RAM is likely not possible. I would lay the issue aside.

That may well be a factor, but is not the whole cause. It's entirely possible to print hundred-plus megabyte PostScript jobs on an old HP 4 series. I used to have two of them here, doing all the proof printouts for the subeditors. The trick is that the PostScript has to be optimized to render the document in narrow bands that /do/ fit into the printer's memory.

I don't know if the PostScript output by Scribus does this, or if GhostScript can convert it to. I'll have to look into it.

If I recall correctly, the 4MP takes standard 72 pin fast-page memory. It's hard to get, but not proprietary, and you may be able to pick it up cheap from someone's old server if you keep your eye out.

You should be able to work around the issue by printing from Acrobat Reader if you tell it to optimize for reduced printer memory use ("save printer memory" in the print dialog). Please let me know if that works, and if it does not please upload the graphics so I can do some testing with my HP 4M here.

I'm inclined to close this as "not an issue" and file a feature request in the tracker for a reduced-memory PostScript mode if printing with reduced memory in Acrobat works. Given that I'm hoping to add an improved UI for printing PDF via acroread/gs (as an alternative to using Scribus's built-in PostScript generation) that might fit in well too.

I looked into the situation with GhostScript. Unless pswrite2, the new ps2ps device, offers a reduced memory mode then it doesn't sound like there's any support. I'm not sure about pswrite2 yet, and still need to look into that.

0007-gray.png is the photo that has been part of the layout of page 2 of the document.

The original color photo is 6.3 megabytes.

I have only uploaded the page 2 photo because page two has been the only page offering a problem.

Any luck with "reduced printer memory" in Acrobat?

I am using Mac OS X and Adobe Reader 7.0.x

In trying the printing, I looked for the option you mentioned, but couldn't find it anywhere.

Yeah ... I just had a look at Acrobat Reader 7 under Mac OS X, and it doesn't have that option. Blast. You could try "print as image" but that doesn't really solve the issue.

Well ... I'll see if I can do some tests on my HP 4MP .

I cannot replicate this error with 1.3.3.x
