Cannot reproduce on an Ubuntu 20.04 system. You will have to provide a backtrace produced with a debug build of Scribus:

Reading symbols from scribus...
(No debugging symbols found in scribus)

your copy of scribus does not contain the debug symbols.

if things have not changed, you should install the package scribus-dbg ...

Is it in apt or apt-get?

Thanks. However given your backtrace it seems your crash has been fixed in a commit dated from August 8th. Are you really using latest 1.5.6.svn build?

I have tried to update several times in the past few weeks, to no avail.

apt-get shows

```
apt show scribus
Package: scribus
Version: 1.5.5+svn23928+dfsg-1+b2
Priority: optional
Section: graphics
Source: scribus (1.5.5+svn23928+dfsg-1)
Maintainer: Mattia Rizzolo <mattia@debian.org>
```

should I try to build from source instead?

Definitely, your build is several months old.

Is there a good tutorial you can point me towards? I had expected the apt package to be a little more up-to-date, and had not expected to need to compile from source myself.

You can run these commands to install dependencies, compile scribus and run it

1) Get scribus dependencies

sudo apt-get build-dep scribus
sudo apt-get install cmake subversion
sudo apt-get install qtbase5-dev qttools5-dev qttools5-dev-tools
sudo apt-get install libpoppler-dev libpoppler-cpp-dev libpoppler-private-dev
sudo apt-get install libharfbuzz-dev
sudo apt-get install python3-dev

Small note: you might have to enable source repositories for the first command to succeed

2) Create build directories, get current sources and compile scribus

mkdir scribus_trunk
cd scribus_trunk
svn co svn://scribus.net/trunk/Scribus
mkdir build
cd build
cmake ../Scribus -DWANT_DEBUG=1 -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=../install
make install

3) Run Scribus

../install/bin/scribus

That did the trick, thanks.

Is the apt package just that far behind?

@benisjammin on ubuntu you can use the PPA:

https://code.launchpad.net/~scribus/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

you can then insteall scribus-trunk to get the latest scribus code.

and you can get both a more conservative 1.5.5 and the latest 1.5.6svn code installed on the same machine.

>> Is the apt package just that far behind?

Yep, the apt package's code is at least two months old vs current svn code.
