Summary | 0017656: Add the item / frame styles to the experimental Scribus features
Description | For years now, we have been discussing item / frame styles, but nothing has happened. Scribus does have styles for different type of content and it must not be that difficult to introduce a new type of style. But I guess that everybody is a bit scared of the monstrous task that implementing it in a sound way all the features can be! With this ticket I'd like to suggest to add a first implementation, with only one specific formatting (inspired by https://forums.scribus.net/index.php/topic,6506.html I would like to suggest the text distances) and, then strategically -- and step by step -- add other type of formatting, while checking if the whole construct holds. Of course, there will be no guarantee of backward compatibility nor a timeline for getting the feature out of the experimental state. The first step would be to add an entry in the Style editor and in the list of experimental features. If you agree with this approach, we can create a ticket for that and add it as a child of this same ticket.

In the comment of this ticket I'd like to collect a list of peculiarities that we will have to consider while implementing the frame styles. One first big challenge is probably the fact that we want the same style to apply to all types of frames -- as an example for the border or background color -- but some of the properties only apply to specific type of frames (like the text distances I mention in the description of this ticket). Some questions: Should it be an option, to restrict a frame style to only a specific type? To multiple types? Should we have tabs with each all the options available or should we have a modular building system that adds blocks of formatting (i.e.: this specific style should have the "Fill" properties)? |
