| Summary | 0017682: Pointer issues with "text frame link tool" | ||||
| Description | Mouse pointer placement issues happen with scribus 1.6.4 when requesting to create a new frame and link it to an overflown text frame. When a text frame is oversflown, a red cross appears at its bottom right. Clicking it enable to enter "create new linked text frame" mode but there are several usability issues during that process : 1) before clicking, 2) after clicking before placing the new linked text frame, 3) after 2nd click that creates the new linked text frame. # ISSUES 1) Issue before 1st click : - when the pointer hovers the red cross, it is a black hand shaped. This is strange because black hands are used to change the size of the frame (move the bottom right corner). There is no visible sign that clicking will, instead, activate a "create new frame" feature. It's not clear when clicking enables this feature exactly. Sometime it does, sometimes not because out of "link frame" zone but still black hand shaped and in "move corner" zone. One has to experiment and know that this is possible... and click "blindly" = with no advance sign of what will happen. 2) Issue after 1st click (so as to enter "linked text frame" creation mode) - When clicking the red cross, the pointer jumps up and right. Jump distance is the height and width of the cursor. -The "+" in the middle of the new pointer shape is even higher since it is up half pointer's height 3) Issue after 2nd clicking (so as to place the new text frame) - the cursor jumps again left and down by the same distance but opposite direction : left and down - the cursor is now an arrow again. that arrow points exactly to the left top angle of the new shape : that is very comfortable and refreshing ! But due to that 2nd Jump the new frame is not placed where it was wished. # WISHES Here are possible improvements : - for step 1) = hovering on red cross : have a dedicated pointer shape when pointer is in such a place that click enters "text linked text frame" creation mode - for step 2) and 3) : dont jump at each click. pointer should change shape but not jump / choose pointer shapes that dont lead to that jumpy rendering and feeling / choose pointer shapes that point toward an identical=non-jumping point / Ensure that frame is created at the place the pointer feels to point to | ||||

Issue 1 seems to be a duplicate of 0017677 Issue 2 happens, but I wonder if it's not a big thing (you want to move the mouse anyway to a new place; maybe it will "hurt" more when clicking on the box will be more reliable) Issue 3 is bad, for the case somebody wants to create a frame at a specific coordinates: the creation does not start at the center of the +, which is what somebody would think should happen. It also happens when one starts the linking mode with the dedicated tool. I guess that 2 and 3 are related and the linking cursor is ill defined. |

I agree 2) is not a big thing since it is a small jump. The issue is only that it is unclear and ambiguous : « I didnt ask for a mouse move. Was that an intended scribus jump ? or maybe a mouse glitch ?» As for 2) and 3) being related : it could be the jump in 2) is "just be an illusion" due to the change of the pointer's shape. Maybe there is no real change of coordinates internaly ? and maybe 3) comes with the end of the illusion ? |
