| Summary | 0017826: RTL mode for tables | ||||
| Description | In a standard Left-to-Right (LTR) table, you interact with the right edge of a column header to change its width. In Right-to-Left (RTL) mode, both the placement of the handle and the physics of the mouse movement completely invert. here is some checklist: Layout & Component Inversion [ ] Column Sequencing: Reverse the column layout so Column 1 starts on the far right and appends to the left. [ ] Row Meta-Data: Move row selection checkboxes and row index numbers to the far right side of the row. [ ] "Add Column" (End of Table): Move the global "Add New Column" button/hitbox so it appears on the far left of the table (the new end of the table). [ ] Contextual Column Insertion (Middle of Table): Invert the logic and text for adding columns in the middle: "Insert Left" must now add a column after the current column (moving toward the end of the table). "Insert Right" must now add a column before the current column (moving toward the start of the table on the far right). Keyboard Navigation (Tab Behavior) [ ] Invert Tab Order: Modify the Tab key behavior inside the grid. Pressing Tab must move the focus to the cell on the left, and Shift + Tab must move it back to the right. | ||||

Currently, we don't have yet a way to say that a document is RTL (see 0017567). In this specific case, the question is if a specific document should only contain RTL or LTR tables or there could be both. Also, since one of Craig's latest commit, we have a default paragraph styles in the table styles. We can use that paragraph direction, to define the default direction in a table. On top of it, as soon as there is text in a cell, the actions on that cells would behave according to the first paragraph in that cell. |

Sometimes we need RTL and LTR tables in one document for example a company needs to publish an annual report both in Arabic & English. We should not limit ourselves for one mode. |

To add another example to what Fahad said, Punjabi is written in two scripts: Gurmukhi (in India) and Shahmukhi (in Pakistan). While Gurmukhi is LTR, Shahmukhi is RTL and there are books that feature both (poetry books for example). |
