Would you mind trying with the Appimage, too?

I'm wondering if it's something related to the way Scribus is packaged for Flatpak....

I'm also using Debian (testing), and I don't have the issue with the Appimage for 1.6.2 (nor with the self compiled 1.7)

Do you have any shared drive mounted?
If yes, can you try to unmount them and see if that is the reason for it?

The problem is present without any network drive nor external drive mounted.

how can I run the flatpak or the appimage in a terminal in verbose mode to get more info ?

I don't think you'll get any useful debug information, there.

What you can also try: install the stable version of Scribus through apt... but I fear that you want to avoid pulling the many dependencies needed by Scribus...

It should be possible to do it, but I've failed to attach a debugger to the Scribus in the Appimage...
That's not easy, either.

Another thing you could try, is to get an Appimage/Flatpak of another Qt based application (Krita?).
Personally, with the information given, I would tip on a Qt problem.
Maybe, due to a missing Qt library in the Appimage/Flatpak (both use a very similar recipe).

Krita via flatpak does not have the problem

Scribus installed via Debian repository does have the problem.
I have not found in the man page how to make it verbose
