| Summary | 0017881: Use a yellow background colour for tooltips to improve readability | ||||
| Description | On most Qt-based programs (e.g. Shotcut, Kdenlive, Krita) and also non-Qt-based ones (e.g. LibreOffice) tooltips have a yellow background colour, which makes them easier to read, because the colour provides a better contrast to the greyscale UIs. It is also better for screenshots. | ||||

... they look yellow on my monitor... |
I was confused ealier, because the bg is already yellow for me (too). |

We don't set it, so it should be the Qt theme default. It's generally yellow anyway. In Ubuntu it's yellow. On macOS its lighter but perfectly legible. |
On Windows it's white, and most people use Scribus on Windows. 1.6.x and 1.7.x. |

On Windows, I would try to use the same color as other Windows applications are using. According to https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/develop/ui/controls/tooltips it might indeed be a dull light gray. Personally, I've never felt that tooltips were not readable on Windows... I would suggest to approach this issue the other way round: convert the very long tooltips we have, in real tooltips with short descriptions and move the current content to a new context aware help system, with real windows, that have a pleasant size and do not disappear as soon as the mouse moves. Sadly, Qt does not seem to provide a way to add a "more..." action to their tooltips, next best probably being the "What's this" tool: https://doc.qt.io/qt-6/qwhatsthis.html (and we could add a small "What's this" icon in the tooltip, when the there is more help available...) |
