Summary0017897: Keep/improve the Auto Hanging Indent checkbox option
DescriptionThis is the something discussed in 0017243 and Fahad suggested it needs its own bug report.

I think I need to explain a little more (which I avoided in the report as it was not related to that):
- the option is there, a checkbox named "Auto Indent" in the Lists & Drop Caps tab
- when checked it creates a perfect hanging indent for numbered and bulleted lists
- it is real helpful when the list entries are paragraphs or multiple sentences
- when it is removed (as I have, Fahad's patch applied), it makes a bit more work to achieve the same
-- you have to go in para style or PP and it becomes a trial and error method for values which align best (see screenshot).
-- but the checkbox "Auto Indent" makes it very simple (and result is perfect, as far as I saw)
- it just needs a rename "Auto Hanging Indent" to me more acurate description
- not much else is needed imo, works fine already

What I meant @Fahad was that in my screenshot you should not see the red-marked spaces. The "have, which, the" in the next lines should perfectly align with the "3 May" (left sides).

The UI checkbox AutoIndent used to achive this the way I defined above.

What you posted, the 2nd and following lines are hanging way away from the 1st line. They align well though but they hang far. They should align with the first line. That is what I am lokking for.

I prefer Para Style most of the time.

I am suggesting if the "Auto Hanging Indent" checkbox could automatically achieve this (screenshot), it would be great, imho.

There are, however, two issues (see screehshots):

* When Suffix is aligned Left
-- things are perfect until the double digit shows up (10 and above)

* When Suffix is aligned Right
-- nothing is fine. Nothings aligns anymore (except the suffix)

I notice that the right alignment woks as expected just set the offset to 0 unless you want the offset then this the right behavior. now the left alignment is broken when you add offset, and it shows this when change from 9 to 10, 99,100 .. so on. I can apply right alignment logic to left alignment but this will change how left alignment is displayed. as shown in this screen-shot. Anyway we have three options:
- change left alignment to the new way.
- accept the current buggy behavior.
- we use the new way only when the user add offset & having more than 10 numbered list.
Personally I don't want to change the current behavior because it will break old projects. I want your feedback.

 1.7svn is breaking the format in several ways, mostly based on the library Scribus is using not having a (known by the team) way to keep a consistent spacing across versions and across platforms.

I did not read the text above in full, but if the previous behavior is wrong, I would not mind too much about breaking wrong output.

But it's Craig and Jean who have the say on that, so you will need for them to speak up...

P.S.: ... On top of it, nowadays one can move back and forth between modern versions of Scribus, and if one only uses "old" features can always use an known / old version of Scribus to create the PDF.

I agree with @ale. I would go with your 1st option: change left alignment to the new way.

Moreover, this is the time to fix it. In the future when more and more people are using Scribus, it will be even harder to take that risk. Of, we wouldnt have to worry about new users that switched to Scribus after the fix.

Also, I am happy to redo a work in a new version, or stick with an older good version.

Today I double-check how other software how they layout the numbered list more than 10. Libreoffice, ms word & Adobe InDesign all of them do it like the new approach which i proposed. So think it is the right thing as ale & qirat said.

I am currently restoring the "Auto indent" checkbox and renaming it to "Hanging indent". The core implementation is almost complete, but I noticed a flaw in the legacy behavior.

Previously, the "Auto indent" feature pushed all lines (except the first line) to the right by a distance equal to the dynamic width of the list number itself. For example, if the item was single-digit (e.g., 9.), it would shift subsequent lines only by the width of that single digit (9), resulting in inconsistent and visually uneven indents across items of different digit lengths.

However, this logic does not conform to standard formatting guidelines:

    According to APA Style (and most major style guides), a hanging indent requires a fixed 0.5-inch (1.27 cm) indent for subsequent lines, keeping the first line flush left.

    A fixed 0.5-inch indent is the standard across almost all academic and professional formatting rules.

In light of this, I believe the current dynamic calculation based on digit width is incorrect and should be replaced with a standard, configurable/fixed hanging indent.

I also have a quick question:
Is hanging indent intended to be restricted exclusively to numbered lists, or are there other use cases within the app where it should also apply (e.g., bullet lists, bibliographies, or custom paragraphs)?

As far as I understand it, I agree with you @Fahad. This is fine for me 0017897:0054184. Also, the renaming. I think "Hanging Indent" is better if there is not something 'auto' going on here.
