Summary0017987: Scribus freezes and crashes Plasma desktop
DescriptionIf I launch Scribus 1.6.6, then start editing text or some basic shapes, Scribus freezes at random time and causes Plasma desktop to crash.

This happens only when Scribus is used, I tested with lts kernel 6.18 and even downgraded mesa packages from 26.2.3 to 26.1.8, and the same behavior errors show.

I re-tested on another laptop, the freezing always happens both with native 1.6.6 and latest 1.7.4.svn, I got the Appimage from https://gitlab.com/scribus/scribus/-/artifacts.

With the Appimage, it freezes the whole desktop and was forced to force manual power off:

Scribus isn't impacting any other font cache, and you have GPU HANG issues. Looks like hardware or video drivers to me.

The problem is that I use my laptop daily and use many apps like: Firefox, thunderbird, gimp, writer, eclipse, dolphin, kate, inkscape, dbeaver... and I don't suffer from any freezing even if I let my laptop running for a whole day, and that CPU HANG never appears in my journald log.

The logs point quite clearly to a GPU/Wayland rendering failure rather than a Scribus crash itself.

The failure starts with repeated i915 `GPU HANG` events in `QSGRenderThread`, followed by KWin/Plasma becoming unresponsive and eventually crashing. The Plasma backtrace goes through `libgallium -> QWaylandGLContext::swapBuffers() -> QRhi::endFrame() -> QtQuick`.

Scribus appears to be a reliable trigger, but the current evidence does not yet identify a Scribus-side defect.

A useful next test would be to run the same Scribus build under X11/XWayland, and separately with software rendering. If either avoids the issue, that would narrow it strongly to the Qt Wayland/EGL/i915 path.
