Summary | 0002495: PDF and PostScript text output one glyph at a time
Description | When PDF and PostScript text is output, it's currently written one drawing operation at a time. If the formatting does not change, it'd be nice to collapse that into a single drawing operation for the run of text, so that the document is smaller and renders more quickly. This comes up on the mailing list periodically, and evidently does cause some issues. Possibly related issues include very slow render times in Acrobat on some platforms / versions; very large PostScript files; difficulty of editing PDF text in (eg) PitStop; etc.
