Summary | 0004606: Master Pages as Styles (mockup included)
Description | In another bug I couldn't find, I recall ringerc contemplating a complete "stylification" of Scribus, i.e. styles for everyhting from a page down to a line. "Page styles" do already exist in the form of master pages, but the way they are created and edited is quite different from other "styles". To add more consistency here, I created a mockup of a page dialog for the style manager. It hopefully explains my thoughts better than words ;)

>>> In another bug I couldn't find, I recall ringerc contemplating a complete "stylification" of Scribus, i.e. styles for everyhting from a page down to a line. I like that idea. :) Questions: What are "separate layer" and "frame" for on the backround tab? Is "edit on canvas" how you add normal page objects, like you can with master pages? |
|
Yes. I strongly agree about the "stylification" of Scribus. Can't find where this is hidden in the bugtracker. But we definitely came across this styling issue. I also like the idea proposed by Christoph. "BĂ©mol" : To me, the Grid and Background tabs are maybe a bit too much. As I see lots of uses for the Page Styles, I am reluctant to separate settings on those two. [I don't say it's a bad idea. I wonder about the usability of this on many many users.] I understand the Shortcut tabs is for just that, keyboard shortcuts. I think this could be part of the first two tabs [My pick : the page tab]. My guess is lots of users will still want to use Master Pages as they do at the moment. The approach proposed here is more structured. I think there is room for both. I suggest we put a [create style] button in the dialog box when Master Pages are brought to front. This [create style] button could be part of a more structured way of experimenting and then deciding to make a style at a certain point, out of any type of settings. A feature that is really [computer-wise] and *really* missing in all apps I know. |

@mkoren: "Separate layer" means that the background is a frame on on an extra layer that will be added automatically. "Frame" means it's just a frame. "Edit on Canvas" would switch to the editing mode we currently have. @Louis, you're right that the "Grid" tab is perhaps too much, but I can imagine cases where other grid setting for certain pages make sense (there is also a bug for that IIRC). |

Uploaded Qt4 .ui that can be opened in Qt5 Designer. Also uploaded screenshots of proposed mockups for convenience (Thanks to Christoph for providing compatible .ui files) |
