Summary | 0004842: Drop caps hang in margin or overlap above line and needs further fine tuning
Description | Depending on the font and character, some drop caps hang in the margin, like A, V and W. Some others don't reach the margin like K. Letters higher than the other caps such as J and Q sit on the baseline instead of hanging from the cap's height of the font and thus overlap the line above. For those two, the actual choice is clear: the constraint that wins is the number of line and the baseline. I would suggest that whenever the case happens, the number of line is increased (generally one extra line will do) and the drop caps hangs from the top instead. Also, the gap between the drop cap and the text varies a lot depending on the letter, from overlap like with J and Q to a tight gap such as with letter K to a wide gap such as with letter W. The workaround to this is nearly impracticable (and sometimes impossible) because you have to tweak each and every drop cap to get the desired result. This includes the manual tracking to the drop cap which is split into all the lines of the drop cap. I acknowledge manual tracking on *each* line of the drop cap is a welcomed addition (QXP doesn't allow to do that, for instance, only *all* the lines). But there is also a need to be able to manually set this distance to all the lines at once.
Steps To Reproduce | To be able to easily see the issue, set a paragraph style with a 5-line drop cap and a zero gap. I used Utopia and Nimbus Roman No9 L to test. I tested with a typesize of 13 pts and a lock to baseline grid set at 15 pts. The text frame is set to 2 columns. Get any text and play with the initial caps of a few paragraph.
Additional Information | Further down the road, I suggest 3 additions to the drop cap menu: 1. To be able to set a different font from the text (very common) 2. To be able to set a different color and tint from the text (also common) 3. To be able to tweak the character scale (common as well)

The uploaded file might not reflect exactly the settings I described since I played a lot with the paragraph style and made only a few screenshots. However, the result is the same. |

The additional info (my "further down the road" suggestion) in that report is mostly a duplicate of bug 0001212 |

Am I right to think this is going to be difficult to solve as an automatism from the program because the issue mainly depends on font parameters such as kerning pairs? QXP has some issues with drop caps as well. :) Here is what we do to solve the margin issue in QXP : we set the drop cap to 2 characters (something we can't do yet in Scribus) and we add a space in front of the drop cap. Then, we manually track to get the drop cap to overlap the space until we reach the desired position. It's a clumsy workaround but it works. Might give an idea on how to solve the issue. |

is this a regression to 1.3.3 ? |
|
I am unable to tell as I don't have 1.3.3 installed. Running only CVS. |
|
remaining difference is that 1338 aligns to capheight, 134 to fontheight |
|
seems fixed now |
