| Description | PDF includes features, such as accessibility tagging of headings, fields, acronyms, text alternatives, etc., that make it suitable for online reading and interaction. Scribus should of course aim to support the full PDF feature set, but in particular, it should aim to support the accessibility components of any features it does support, especially tagged PDF and text alternatives. For example, if you can insert an image, then it should be possible to supply a text alternative. If you can insert a heading, then it should be possible to tag it as a heading. | ||||

I wanted to agree with this point but also add that LibreOffice has support for this accessibility standard. It is called PDF/UA (PDF Universal Accessibility), and LibreOffice will also create warnings on export for missing text alternatives because as I understand, PDF/UA requires text alternatives (mandatory) or for images to be marked as decorative. LibreOffice also has a type of Accessibility Checker built into the software (however limited it may be). PDF/UA is an ISO standard for accessibility so Scribus at some point ideally should have support for making PDFs accessible, because the world of PDF is not only for print but for documents. Given PDF accessibility is a legal requirement for businesses in most countries, I think the priority for this issue should be higher than "normal", even if it may be a difficult problem to solve. |
