Summary0006193: Image with NoPrint attribute is not visible in exported PDF document
DescriptionWhen an image is defined as not printable (Image Properties -> X, Y, Z -> Print icon crossed) and the page is exported to PDF then the image is not visible when the PDF is viewed in Adobe Reader (8.1).
Instead the image should be visible when VIEWED in a PDF viewer, only when the PDF document is PRINTED (from Adobe Reader) then this image should not be printed.

Setting a PDF object to be visible in the viewer and not being visible in the printout is a STANDARD FEATURE of PDF documents and should be implemented when exporting a page to PDF from Scribus!

This bug still persists in scribus-1.3.3.10svn-070823-snapshot

This means that Scribus IMHO doesn't really EXPORT the page to PDF (as far as images a concerned), it just PRINTS the page to PDF ...

BTW, the current version of OpenOffice Writer has the same bug ...

Could it be that Acrobat has the Bug, given the fact that 2 Applications are producing wrong results with 2 different PDF-Export librarys?

"enable/disable printing --> enable/disable exporting"

Does this mean that "enable/disable printing" has just been renamed to "enable/disable exporting"?

Or does this mean that the feature making an image viewable but not printable in the exported PDF does now work?

First one (renaming). It was just an error in labeling. Intended behaviour with the "no printing" option in the properties palette's x,y,z page is to disable exporting of the object.

The feature you probably wanted is currently only available for pdf fields (not image frames) through pdf field options. As such it's a different issue and should have a feature request (bug report) of it's own.

"Intended behaviour with the "no printing" option in the properties palette's x,y,z page is to disable exporting of the object."

Are we talking about the same thing? When the icon is crossed (switched off) then the image is also disabled from printing (although visible) in Scribus itself. (Please see the attached screenshot PrintOnOff.gif of the icon I mean).

"The feature you probably wanted is currently only available for pdf fields"

If with pdf fields you mean button-objects, this is not true: I've switched off the Print option for a button and exported the page to PDF. Result: The button is missing in the PDF.

Just for buttons this is important: They should be visible in the PDF but not be printed.

Quoting myself here "for pdf fields through pdf field options". Pdf field options can be found by double clicking on a pdf field or from it's context menu's "PDF Options>Field Properties" entry. There you will have a combo box "Visibility" with an entry called "No Print". If this can be applied to any object in a pdf document (even image fields) then I'd suggest you to open a new bug report for that.

The ability to control the printing of any PDF object is only available in PDF versions higher than 1.4. It can be done only be the optional content features of PDF-1.5 and higher. Sadly Acrobat Reader seems to ignore the "Don't Print" setting, at least all the versions i have. It always prints the entire document.

See the attached PDF document "PrintMe.pdf". It uses PDF version 1.3. When displayed in Adobe Reader 8.1 it shows the background image, but when the PDF is printed the background image is not printed (only the textbox is printed).

Even tho the file is marked PDF 1.3, the layers aka optional content is only part of PDF 1.5+. So to me this is non-standard, non-conforming PDF.

See the PitStop REport attached.

Closing this issue: << the ability to control the printing of any PDF object is only available in PDF versions higher than 1.4. It can be done only by the optional content features of PDF-1.5 and higher >>.

So if you want an image or any other object not to print but still be visible in the final PDF, you need to place it on a non printable layer and export to PDF >= 1.5 with the "Include Layers" option enabled.
