Summary0006338: More options for "drop caps"
DescriptionHi,
The french word for "drop caps" seems to be "Lettrines" and it doesn't only mean "Drop" letters because there are various styles. Dropped or "Upped" according to vertical alignment; but inner- and outer- margin too. I think it would be nice to use options like the one used for alignment of objects to place the "Lettrine", and maybe (a dream) to choose a special police, different than the rest of the paragraph, for this special letter.
Thanks anyway and congratulation !!!

Yes. Seems like a good idea to, especially the option to choose a different font.

Interestingly, inner and outer margin drop caps are already available in the Paragraph Style menu. You can play with the first line indent and the left indent, using positive and negative values.

Ex. Outer margin drop cap
First line indent set to -40 pts
Left indent set to 40 pts

Ex. Inner margin drop cap
Set the First line indent to any positive value. Try with 40 pts to get the feel of it.

Thanks Louisdesjardins.
I quickly tried with lorem ipsum, but the result is not perfect. It depends of the width of the drop cap.
So the rest isn't in line between the paragraph starting with L and the one starting with S.
I tried then to outer the cap of the text frame, hope the rest would stay aligned inside, but then it crashed (Linux 1.3.4 version).
I didn't retry.
Thanks !

This is expected behaviour, though.

The only workaround I can think of for the moment is to do this using an additional text frame on top of the bodytext to move the bodytext away to the desired value (using the Text flow around object feature in the PP) and add another text frame to hold the drop cap. If you set your drop cap to align to the right in its frame, group the 2 frames together and put them into the scrapbook for further use. The result of this is all the text will be properly aligned provided you place your drop cap group at the same offset value, but the drop cap, of course, will not be (they can't be in this case) aligned on one another.

I am writing all this because if we are going to implement such a feature (which I hope), settings should allow to set the drop cap to align on left or on right on the text margin. When aligned on the right, the hanging would depend on the indent value for the drop cap, some letters would hang more than others. M versus I for instance.

Does that reflect what you have in mind?

Draft of what the Drop cap style could be.

Drop cap settings {set as a char style option}

    Number of lines ____
    Number of characters ____ {greyed when Picture set is chosen
    Distance from text
        [] Fixed space
        [] Freely adjusted (manual kerning)
        [] Adjusted according to kerning table (to come)

[] Font for drop cap
    [] Font name
    [] Font face
    [] Color for font + %
    [] Color for font contour + %
    [] Gradient {same options as in color palette}
    [] Drop shadow
    [] Color for drop shadow + %
    [] Hor. scale
    [] Vertical scale

[] Picture set for drop cap
    Path to picture folder _____ [browse button]
    Tooltip: This will create a picture frame and place the corresponding picture of each letter included in the specified folder. Pic names should be set as A.png, B.png, C.png and so on (or .svg or any supported image format).
    [] Set distance from frame to text ____
    [] Adjust picture frame to image
    [] Scale image

[] Hanging drop cap
    [] Sits on line _____ {options depends on the number of lines set above}
    [] Aligns to the left {default value}
    [] Aligns to the right
        Set right margin for drop cap ____ {Warning: this also relates with the First line indent and Right margin value of the parent paragraph.}

[] Following small caps (these would inherit the bodytext font)

Yes. But i think at the same principle to align verticaly : i see 4 positions
inner text, drop cap (under baseline)
outer text, drop cap
inner text, upper cap (above baseline)
outer text, upper cap
with maybe something like the dot box used to choose the axis for rotation to set this option. I don't see anything more we could ask.
One last word, you mention a path for picture and various format of them. Wouldn't you include font too, because some special ttf/otf fonts contains lovely curves and corners as background for the drop cap ? Or we could "surimpose" various fonts for effects.
Thanks again !
Edit : i think you're right, i did not understand the parameter "sits on line ___" which can make vary the vertical alignment to upper the letter. (Sorry)

Following you on the "OTF special glyphs usage" road, (when OTF is fully available in Scribus) user could be given the choice of using those glyphs instead of the regular letter shape.

For special type effect, it may be possible to add a "Convert font to outline" option and force text to runaround this polygon.

For the image set, the image frame would get the same possibilities given to any image frame. So anything we can do with an image could be set there too as part of the style instructions. I forgot to mention this. Same for text, if I forgot to mention something.
