Summary | 0008632: Distribute objects to Layers
Description | Distribute objects to Layer according to their stacking order. This will help designer quickly separate elements of their designs for greater manageability. Note that the grouping feature discussed in the tutorial could include Scribus implementing sub-layers used for multiple objects on the same layer.
Steps To Reproduce | Select any number of, or all objects on the canvas then go to the menu "Items > Distribute to Layers" to move each object to its own layer the layers will be stacked according to the original stacking order of the objects as they were when resting on a single layer, the layers will have the same name as the object unless this feature is turned of in the Preferences. Grouping like objects to the same layer can also be turned on in the Preferences.
Additional Information | Tutorial: Distribute Objects to Layers As you build your layout objects are place on the Background Layer and are stacked on top of each another as they are created, in time your design may become quite complexed and hard to manage. One way to make your design more manageable is to manually move each object to its own layer then turn off certain layers to work easily on objects on other layers. Now with the new Distribute to Layer function in Scribus you can do this automatically for one or all of the objects in your document, each layer is named according to the object on it so it is a good practice to get into the habit of giving your objects descriptive names such as Headline or Pull_Quote etc, use the underscore separate_names. To distribute objects to new layers automatically created by Scribus first select the objects in your design by clicking on them with the left mouse button, hold the shift key down on the keyboard to select multiple objects or click the Edit menu then click Select All or press Ctrl + A on the key board to select all of the objects on the canvas. Next click on the Items menu then click Distribute to Layers, all your selected objects will then be distributed, each on its own layer. You will notice after distributing the objects the resulting layers will have the same name as the object on it, this feature of naming the layer to the objects name can be turned of in the Preferences under Functions by clearing the check box "Objects Name Layers" Also the object grouping feature can be turned ON which allows the same kind of objects to be gathered together and placed on individual layers the objects will also retain their original stacking order, use this feature if you like to have all text frames on their own layer all images on their own layer etc. Note: That the layer will be named to the top most object in the stacking order, so if the object on the top is named Headline the layer will be named Headline when objects are distributed this way. Also note it is easy to place any newly made objects on to the new layers by right clicking new object with the mouse and selecting "Send to Layer" from the context menu or by clicking on an existing object to activate the layer it is on then grab the tool you wish to use text, shape, line, image... and start to draw, also you can right click on an empty part of the canvas and select "Go to Layer" from the context menu to activate the layer you wish to add objects to or click on a layer in the Layers pallet to activate the chosen layer.
