Summary | 0008673: feature request: add option in paragraph styles to apply a particular character style to the first line of text
Description | Currently, to perform such a thing is a bit of manual trial and error, highlighting what one hopes will become the eventual first line of text in the new style, applying the style, and then adding/removing words from the selection (and style) until the first line is set. However, if the text changes (insert or remove a word) or the width of the text frame (or drawing area due to drawing around another frame) changes this process must be caught manually and repeated. The idea for this feature is such that this character style is applied automatically if the text frame width changes, if the text changes, if the font size changes, etc. to the first line of text. This is a fairly common paragraph style feature "similar" to drop caps and likely belongs in a similar location in the paragraph styles editor pane. (Luckily in 1.3.5.1 at least there is some empty space here. :) The controls would be: [x] checkbox Use alternate Character Style for first line of text Character Style: [select list] (disabled if checkbox is false) (with additional selections of 'use parent value' if this is a child paragraph style) An alternate or accompanying ideas would be to instead of only the first 1 line, allow the style to apply to the first N lines of text or first N words or first N characters. But the first 1 line of text would be the nicest for me. It might be tempting to not just allow the selection of a Character Style but to allow the in-Paragraph Style 'creation' of a Character Style 'based on' an existing character style or similar, with the widgets basically reproduced from the 'Character Style' tab of Paragraph Style. Personally I feel this leads to duplicate maintenance of styles and a pollution of the interface but for a simple 'all caps' first line it would be very tempting; most 'first line' styles would be such one-offs, or indeed simply one-offs of the existing character style for the paragraph style; the most basic implementation which would satisfy my needs would be to have a UI section below the Drop Caps section such as: Character Style modifications for first line: [K] (all caps toggle button from character style properties) (Though it seems that the regular 'row' of character style toggle buttons might be useful.)
