Summary0009881: Preview mode is too slow
DescriptionA user says that switching to Preview Mode takes 34-40 seconds in 1.4.0rc2 for him.

Specs:

- a 24 A4 pages newspaper
- 4 pages in color, the rest is b/w
- main text is 10pt
- 2-3 photos on every page
- the pages in color have collages of both bitmap and vector graphics (EPS and SVG).

The computer is: HP laptop, Intel Core i3 CPU M 370 2.40GHz, 3GB RAM, both OpenSUSE 11.4 and Windows XP SP3.

The users says preview is subjectively slower after adding SVG rather than EPS.

Preview mode relies on ghostscript too,. what version is installed?

is the preview mode really using ghostscript?

are we not mixing print preview and preview mode?

the size of the picture or -- more likely -- the complexity of the SVG could explain the lack of performance. (including an SVG can add LOTS of shapes to your sla)

ah yes preview mode.. well.. no gs there, no.. so this is of course dependent on number of items.. etc.. svg vs eps makes no difference unless the eps is loaded into an image frame in which case it is also a bitmap via gs.

well, importing from eps means that gs is probably used on both sides: eps creation and eps reading...

and gs may do a better job in simplifying the shapes.

it would be interesting to see the files your user is talking about
