Summary0009316: Alternative icon for Render Frames
DescriptionOne issue that came up again and again during Scribus trainings was the Render Frame icon. It contains the letters "TEX", and since most users have no idea what TeX is, they read it as "Text" and use this one for text frames -- not just a few, but almost all of them!

Here's an alternative icon from a LyX icon set (http://wiki.lyx.org/uploads/LyX/Graphics/icons_256.tar.gz). It's intended to be used for formulas and depicts a slide-rule. The advantage of this version, as I see it, is that it's quite abstract and would also cover graphs (at least).

Please test and comment.

the idea is good and the proposal not bad... but i have the feeling that it is too tightly related with the idea of calculation.

this may be ok for povray and -- somehow -- for latex formulas.

but i don't think it's the best choice for lilypond... and from the feedback we get, after latex, lilypond is the most used software for the render frames.

two more drafts attached...

The second one looks good. Thanks!

I tried adding some color to toolbar_renderframe_02.svg
when you export to the appropriate sized icon, the detail of the gears is more or less invisible: see snapshot1.png

I think gpittman effort is good. For the record, have uploaded snapshot3.png which shows my effor compared to ale and the full svg

my uploads were only drafts... nice to see you play with them.

just two remarks:
- let's keep a low contrast (all scribus icons should integrate well in the user's work and -- on top of it -- the render frame is not really important.
- i like snapshot 3 from owen (can be improved with less saturated yellow and some sort of hole in the middle?)

here is another, snapshot2.png

this one, I might add, "made with Scribus" using text on a path.

I like the last one.. but yellow is not well seen.. what about the red and a darker grey? or just a thick outline?

Another version...
outlined the "gear" and "doc"
doc dark grey
made background transparent
snapshot7.png
btw, this red is the same, but with outline looks darker

No, the grey is just a blob.. needs detail or to be something else, like just the outline of a frame.

Ok, here are 2 versions following Craig's suggestion...

made a simple rectangle with simulated selection features -- outline in red, with pseudohandles (which you probably can't see)

snapshot8.png
snapshot9.png

the latter one used some transparency over the gear

I think the frame needs to be 2px wide, and/or the gear needs to be 1 less wide..

My opinion: Revert to version 7 and create a higher contrast, i.e. more black.

More confusing fun...

snapshot7b is a slight variant of snapshot7

for snapshot11 I decided to change the gear a bit, put the frame behind it
snapshot12 enhances the frame to be blacker
snapshot13 goes back to the prior gear, otherwise more like 12

snapshot13.png has the look and feel of a rendition machine. I would probably want to make the(13) cog a wee bit smaller and increase the frame slightly to compensate overall height.

I think you have a winner.

Ok. At this point I'll wait to see if there are other points of view as people scan the various renditions.

in an effort to make the scribus GUI a bit less colorful, i attach a desaturated proposal:

toolbar_render_desaturated.png

it's based on the first few proposal made in this bug report.

i'm also attaching a .svg containing several icons i've rejected + the desaturated one.

I'd tend to say the frame size of snapshot 9 with the colours of 13 might be the best.

Ale, we want colour as an option, so we need that first, desaturated can come after

Ok, 2 more

snapshot14.png
snapshot15.png

14 takes owen's cue and shrinks the gear a bit
15 is the original sized gear from 9

Both have the frame on top of the gear, since I think that looks better and makes the frame recognizable (sort of)

ale

well, i guess it's easier to put colors on a desaturated icon than desaturate an existing one...

can you try to produce a desaturated version of your icon and see if it works well?

Mike

2010-08-18 12:40

reporter   ~0024499

personally... I think that the icon doesn't seem look good

I would like to know:

size(s),
how should icon look like and
colour

of icon. I could attempt to design that icon...

gpittman

2010-08-18 13:22

developer   ~0024500

If the devs put so much effort into minutiae of Scribus as is being expended on this one tiny icon, there would be virtually no progress at all. This 16-pixel icon is not going to be high art.

I think if any of the renditions seems better than the current icon, it should be adopted, and then it can be changed again as more feedback and better proposals are being made.

14 looks good..

Mike, feel free to design a 16x16 icon that indicates using a process to render to a frame.. right now, i think 14 represents the idea a lot better than the current one.

i like the engines from render_[123], but i'm not sure that the square in the background is recognized as a file or code to act upon.

the engines in render and snapshot* look a bit too much like flowers to me...

I'm willing to accept almost any suggestion if we just could get rid of the current icon. I know that it's very difficult to "conceptualise" the meaning of RFs in a 16x16 icon, but does an icon for a feature that's meaningless for many users deserve that much attention?

cbradney, please just pick one for 1.3.9, and then we shall see how users react (I don't expect a revolt with any of the proposals).

Replacing the icon with the tooltip text doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Why can't we simply use one of the icons mentioned above?

Resolving.. Christoph.. I just checked out from public SVN and built.. no issue.. problem is on your side.

Mike.. would you like to come up with a concept of tool icons like your render frame one for the rest of the tools? (but dont post in this bug please)
