OS | Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 | OS Version | 6.06
Product Version | 1.3.3.3
Summary | 0004308: EPS import failure when importing via File > Import
Description | I created the file in Quark 4.1x saved it as an eps file. Tried to open it in Scribus 1.3.3.3 for windows and Ubuntu linux. The eps file begins to open it reaches 2 blue bars @33% and I receive fatal error. The importing file test.eps failed. I converted the eps file to sla and the document open blank. I open the file in Photoshop 6 and save it as a psd file. I try to open this file in Scribus and I receive the same error. I open the file in CS2 9.0.1 (Photoshop) and save it as a psd file. I try to open this file in Scribus the converting bar reaches 90% and I receive one image (which is a tiff file) failed and then a screen pops ups in scribus an ask if I want to save as a eps(converted) sla file. I give it a new name save it. The box opens with a big X in the middle.
Steps To Reproduce | Same as above
Additional Information | I will help if I am offered some guidance. We are meeing with an Educational Administrator here in New York City and the question will be if this solution is comparable to Microsoft (Yes, but need to show it), will the deployment work with Linux Terminal Servers and cost analysis. With kind regards,

I recently had lots of problems with some files created PS CS 2 (EPS, PSD, TIF). It wasn't just Scribus, but even PS 6 couldn't open them. I saved them by opening in Corel PhotoPaint 11 and re-saving from there. I assume Adobe has enhanced the incompatibily mode in CS 2. |
|
Can you attach the original Quark 4 file ? I'd like to see what is odd going here. I am confident there is a solution. I do have Quark 4 available on both platforms for testing. |

Plinnel you requested a quark created file and I uploaded one with your name on it. Let me know if this works and if it does not I can send it to you by YouSendIT.com |
|
What I need from quark is the collect for output, not just the quark file.. this includes the images.. no need for the fonts, i have the ones in your file |

Attached is the collect for output quark file. Please, update. |
|
I need the actual PSD files. Quark files do not embed the images like a word processor, they are externally linked. The .xtg file does nothing without the linked images. Thanks |

I upload the PSD of the saved Quark Plinnel.eps. I also zipped the eps quark filed and uploaded it as well. You now have the quark, collect output, psd of the eps and the actual eps file zipped. Let me know if you need anything else. |
|
All the files were generated on my system. Yes, the Plinnel related files were from Photoshop 6. I will redo them all in CS2 and upload them today. |

There are two issues here: 1. You cannot import the PSD with 1.3.3.3 under Windows. I can open and import this in any version of Scribus 1.3.3.3+ running Suse 10.1 I will test Windows later on. So this suggests possible problems unique to Ubuntu - we've seen those before. 2) EPS import hangs GS running 99 % CPU, so something in EPS is hanging GS with the way it is called. GSview can open the EPS, but it throws error messages relating to the DSC comments. Knowing Quark, I am not surprised. |

The EPS and PSD import for me on Windows 2000 and 1.3.3.4 |
|
PLINNEL22 is a CS2.psd file. After reading your statement below what is your conservative suggestion about importing already window created graphic files into scribus if asked? Where ILO deploys linux & scribus this will not be an issue because the files will be freshly created within linux. Wondering if the same will happen in a Macintosh environment because we work with MACs as well. We are just installing ubuntu on the MAC. Do any of these issues exist in Red Hat, Centos or Mandrake? |
|
PLINNEL have you played with Vista yet? |
|
The CS2 version of the file imports in 1.3.3.3+ on Suse 10.1 >Played with Vista yet ? No. |
|
I'm able to reproduce the import failure with 1.3.3.3 on win32, gs 8.53, full and correct path to gswin32c.exe in prefs:colorimage i_image Error: /rangecheck in --get-- Operand stack: 0 () 0 0 () 0 Execution stack: %interp_exit .runexec2 --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- 2 %stopped_push --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- false 1 %stopped_push 1 3 %oparray_pop 1 3 %oparray_pop 1 3 %oparray_pop --nostringval-- 1 3 %oparray_pop 1 3 %oparray_pop .runexec2 --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- 2 %stopped_push --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- %loop_continue --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- %loop_continue --nostringval-- Dictionary stack: --dict:1131/1686(ro)(G)-- --dict:0/20(G)-- --dict:169/200(L)-- --dict:279/400(L)-- Current allocation mode is local |

Interestingly, Scribus rasterises the EPS with gs just fine. |

Perhaps we need to clarify: You should import PSD into an image frame, Scribus does not 'convert' PSD files on import and there should not be a status bar when importing PSD. There are two different methods of importing EPS. One is to import EPS into an image frame. That works. The second is vua File > Import which converts the objects into native Scribus objects - that is failing in some cases. |

The last line in the (attached) ps.out from a failed import is:im 35.3994 35.3096 208.08 102.24 0.0 578 284 psdcmyk C:\Documents and Settings\Craig Ringer\Desktop\Document--PLINNEL-1.tif |

Plinnel, Ringerc: You are absolutely correct: 1. If I choose to open a windows graphic created file like photoshop (6 and 9X)I will have to open a image screen first and Import; select Get Image and not EPS/PS and it will work. I have attached a screenshot of the open document. 2. I tested the same procedure on Ubuntu Linux Dapper w/latest patches and it took a total of 40 minutes to open the document and attached a screenshot of this as well. 3. I went back to windows and elected to print the document at 100% scale. The document prints but it is a mini, mini, mini-me version. I tried to print it out to a pdf to upload and the wheel for adobe acrobat has been spinning for the last hour and half and I recieved an error. I have attached that as well. |
|
Requesting update. Thanks, Ed |
|
This imports into an image frame without problems in 1.3.4, but as the fonts are not embedded correctly (known issue with Quark) I am not sure we can do more until the EPS's exported are more conformant to the spec. |
