Description | The actual Edit > Replace Colors dialog allows just that, as expected, replace a color by another one. One limitation of this is it’s not possible through this interface to change one color to another but with a different tint. Original colors Spot Color 1: blue Spot Color 2: pale blue Spot Color 3: yellow Spot Color 4: red The target color is you need all those colors to become a tint of the blue color You need "pale blue" to become "blue" at 50% You need "yellow" to become "blue" at 10% You need "red" to become "blue" at 75% How do you do this through the Replace Colors interface? How do you do this without selecting one by one the elements (say it came from an svg or a eps file) or part of this element? Going into the .sla file and edit the colors is easy (but somehow cumbersome) and some users will find it more convenient if the settings was accessible in the interface. So, in this dialog there would be an extra field that would allow the user to select the percentage of the target color. Is there another way that I am not aware of? | ||||

The shade / saturation is a separate property of the specific element, not of the color. What you can do is change the color in Edit->Colors. It will then automatically be used by all elements. You can also duplicate the target color and change the duplicate color to be lighter, if you need both. Otherwise this rather seems to be a good use case of a more general find and replace element properties function. |

If we use any of the CMYK colors, we can call them anyway we want and attribute them a specific tint, it will always result in one single plate. For instance, if I pick Magenta and use Magenta at 100% I have nothing else to do that use that color. Then if I need 3 variations of that color to be consistently applied to objects on my layout I can name those as follows: Magenta 25 > Magenta 25% Magenta 50 > Magenta 50% Magenta 75 > Magenta 75% If I remain in the CMYK scheme (if I don’t check the box for spot color), this choice of colors will not create 3 extra plates. Everything will be on the Magenta plate. We should be allowed to do the exact same thing with spot colors. Checking the spot color option results in a new color and it is not possible from within the GUI to modify the tint of that color. We need to edit the SLA to acheive that. It’s not a matter of object. It’s a matter of plate. It’s even remotely a matter of color, in fact. The way to get around this situation would be to use a CMYK color all the way in the process. At separation time we would end up with the number of plates that we need. For instance, a 2-color print will result in 2 plates: Black + Spot gives us 2 plates. In this case we would have information of the Black Plate and on the Magenta Plate, leaving Cyan at 0% value (or simply unused) and same for Yellow. On press we would use those two plates and put Black ink into the ink container for that plate. And we would put the color we really physically need in replacement of the Magenta ink for that plate. What’s possible with any of the CMYK color should be possible with any spot color. A spot color results in it’s own plate. And this plate is absolutely no different than any other plate. It’s just an additional plate because it will be used to print an additional color. In other words and in short, what we need is to be able to do from the GUI what we can do from within the SLA file: add tints to a spot color, keeping one single plate for that color. |
