Except for the text colour, this is not fixed. The red @ symbol is still there. Moreover double-clicking on a inline-object text frame reduces the document to the inline text frame.

I'm not sure if you are 100% aware what you are doing here, see my comments below
>create two text frames,
>fill one with sample text.
>click on the *frame* and copy.
This copies the whole frame to the clipboard

>double click the other and insert.
This inserts the contents of the clipboard as an inline frame.

>right click on that, story editor.
>there is a red @.
Thats correct as the content of this textframe is only the inline frame.

>leave SE.
>open the other frame in SE, everything is red.
This issue is fixed.

>Moreover double-clicking on a inline-object text frame reduces the document to the inline text frame.
Thats intended as a quick way to edit inline-objects.

As to the last point: How do I get out of this editing mode for inline objects and back to the original doc? There is no new window or tab, and nothing else I can see. If it exists, it is well-hidden.

By means of experiments I learned that File > Close is the way back to the original frame. This is, IMHO, completely unintuitive, as "Close" would indicate closing the whole project.

OK, reading the svn/git logs I learned that there actually *is* a way back via a new button. I'll close this one and create a new bug for the creation of a new Help file that deals with Inline Frames.
