Summary0004295: Slightly confusing string: Page layout
DescriptionIn the Document Setup/Preferences > Document the string "Page Layout" is a bit confusing IMHO. Page layout is applied to a single page, and we have master pages, or the Manage Page Properties dialog for that purpose. It's even more confusing, because the same string and the same feature reappears in the Arrange Pages dialog. My suggestion: Change it to "Document Layout".

To me it should not be available from the arrange pages, I find it uselessly redundant. Sometimes redundancy is good but in this case.

Yes it could be renamed to Document Layout, but mentioning Document is a pleonasm based on current capabilities of the pages system, and that there is already a title on this page named Document. Further mentioning on that page is useless. Mentioning Page Layout is still correct IMO, as it's a children of page; should be assimilated as Document Page Layout.

Just "Layout" or "Spread type" in the Document Setup..Document page would be enough, but I'm not sure it's as good as it should be.

The right name in the page manager is rather Document Page Layout, or the whole meaning of what you decide to change it to (if so) in the Document Setup dialog.

"To me it should not be available from the arrange pages, I find it uselessly redundant. Sometimes redundancy is good but in this case."

Franz has explained somewhere else, that this is temporarily necessary and will disappear if other issues have been fixed.

I like your suggestion "Spread type". One could also think of "Page arrangement", but this would semantically interfere with "Arrange pages".

As for the pleonasms, I don't think they are that important, as long as the meaning is clear. One could also think of "Document type". That way, we could get rid of that layout thingy, since this not necessarily a "layout".

Opinions anybody?

What about "Margin Layout"?

I would take that out from the General Prefs anyways. This is a decision one has to make on each document. It has to be somewhere. Since it's already in the Edit > New menu, why have that option in the Prefs? This is redundant.

As to Arrange pages, if the feature is there to help users modify an existing document (mainly margins and spread disposition), then, why not? It happens that layout margins change dramatically. We have to have a clean way to do that. I think it's a production necessity. Unless there is another way to manage this, I would leave it where it is. I only have a difficulty with the name of the main menu "Windows" which doesn't ring a bell to me. I would not have looked there intuitively to search for that feature.

Getting back to the core issue, I can't really say the actual name is uncorrect but I do agree we have to be cautious with names we give to different features as to not create any confusion.

The actual feature lets users apply margins options and how their document is displayed. It's the reading order. Of course, if you hit double-sided, your document will not necessarily be printed in that order. Depending on the number of pages, we will need to output single pages at the end to make the imposition. OTOH, when you hit 3-fold and 4-fold, chances are you also have to output the full spread as a whole to print it.

Based on that, I don't think the name "Page Layout" is wrong because it really is that, imo. The way you make your layout affects your margins and the way you will work. You could put "Layout". I don't think "Margin Layout" solves the case because it's more than just margins.
