Summary0007936: PostScript import messes up fonts
DescriptionI have a file created by printing to PostScript. It contains just text, nothing special. Using lpr it prints fine to a Phaser 7400DN (Adobe level 3), to a Laserjet 8000DN (Clonescript level 2) and a Laserjet 5SiMx (Adobe level 2). From the command line when I type "gs <filename>.ps I get a screen image that is perfectly correct. In other words, there is nothing wrong with the file and there is nothing wrong with GhostScript.

I placed the file into Scribus with File > Import > Vector Image. As
soon as I saw it on screen I knew I was in trouble. Pieces of each word
were overlaid on top of other parts of the words. And that is what I
get in print output as well.

"gs --version" returns 8.63.

Steps To ReproduceGo to File > Import > Get Vector File and import the Interpreting_IPA-1.ps file that I have uploaded.

Ack! I have Scribus 1.3.5svn Build *April 5, 2009*, not April 23. Duh!

Can you try to use an EPS without embedding fonts and install the corresponding fonts in Scribus instead?

Thanks for the excellent suggestion. Sadly, it did not work. But the process may shed light on what is causing the problem. Here is what I did:

First, the table was originally created in OOo Writer 3.0.1 on Intrepid. It works fine there, and the .ps output is perfect, because Ghostscript displays it perfectly. I created it by printing "selection" to file from Writer.

Writer can export to PDF, but not to EPS. So the first thing I did to try your suggestion was to copy and paste the table into OOo Draw, because Draw can export to EPS. What a mess! Let me just say that OOo Draw is NOT the tool for creating tables! After some effort trying to get it reformatted the way it had been in Writer I gave up.

Then I installed ps2eps, figuring that I'd just convert the PS file to EPS directly. That worked fine.

Finally, I created an image frame in Scribus and used Get Image to place the new EPS file into it. It came in perfectly. However, it is rasterized.

So then I used File > Import > Get Vector File to place the EPS. And when the EPS appeared on the page it was messed up exactly the same as when I placed the original PS file.

So the problem is in whatever module the EPS and PS filters have in common.

Oh, and I can place the new EPS image in any other program and it works fine. Ditto for the PS file.

I have uploaded the EPS file.

Additional information:

Avox' suggestion made me think of other possibilities. After a bit of poking around I discovered that Inkscape can import PDF files. So I exported the table from Writer as a PDF, imported to Inkscape, then saved as SVG. Then I used File > Import > Get Vector File and placed the SVG.

It worked! Yay!!!

So the bug with the PS and EPS vector files remains. But at least I have a workaround. And hopefully the fact that placing SVGs works where PS and EPS do not will help pinpoint where the problem is.

I have uploaded the SVG file.

I have discovered further facts that may help isolate the problem. It appears that the PS and EPS vector import is taking individual letters and moving them on the line so they appear on top of other letters in the word. But the most interesting part is that the characters that are moved are only those from the IPA block in Unicode. Regular English text works fine.

I have uploaded a Scribus 1.3.5svn file (test2.sla) showing the problem. If you ungroup the PS file on the page and zoom in you can see the characters placed on top of other characters.

As I said before, the PS file is fine because it appears correctly in Ghostscript and when imported into Inkscape, plus it prints fine when sent to a printer with lpr. The problem is in the PostScript import filter in 1.3.5svn. And I am now using the Beta (April 19), and the problem remains.
