Summary0009519: Required documentation updates for 1.4
DescriptionHere's a list of files that are in urgent need of an update:

Under "Setup":

- fonts1.html
- fonts2.html
- gsfont.html
- fonts3.html
- fonts4.html
- fonts5.html
- fonts-win32.html

General thoughts on this section:

1) We need a short explanation of font types and their levels of support in
Scribus (I'm willing to write the general introduction, because I can use an
article I wrote for Linux Magazin as a starting point).
2) This section ought to be really cross-platform, i.e. we need to cover all
platforms. Currently, much of the content is Linux/UNIX-only, with an appendix
for Windows.
3) As for Linux/UNIX, both KDE and Gnome should be treated equally.

Under "PDF Export":

- pdfexport1.html
- pdfexport2.html
- pdflavor.html
- pdfx3.html
- pdfexport3.html
- javascriptpdf.html
- pdf_form.html
- pdfexport4.html

This section needs considerably less work than the previous one and will be
more of a clean-up.

A few personal suggestions:

1) Let's call it "Export" and focus on PDF export, but we should also add
information on SVG, EPS, PostScript, bitmap and text export.
2) As with the previous section, I'd like to see a short general introduction
on export formats and output targets in general, and PostScript/PDF in
particular.

Under "Printing":

- print2.html
- cups.html
- print3.html
- prepress.html

This section may need some restructuring, as it doesn't separate clearly
between the average user's inkjet/laser printer, printing on a high-level
PostScript printer and commercial printing. Also, it's no cross-platform
documentation, and finally, I think we should be honest enough to tell our
users that direct printing from Scribus may not work at all.

As for the file prepress.html, it contains a link to a PDF file:
http://docs.scribus.net/content/en/pdfs/pre-press.pdf. This file is incredibly
old and should be replaced!

Under "Color Management":

- cms.html
- cms1.html
- cms2.html
- cms3.html
- cms4.html
- moncal.html

Another candidate for clean-ups and an update, but it also needs to cover all
or at least the most popular platforms (*nix, Windows, Mac OS). OS/2 can be
added later (if there is something valuable to add).

I know, this looks like a lot of work (and it probably is), but we're now
paying the price for neglecting the documentation for years. There's a lot of
content that can be reserved for the printed manual, but I think the 1.4
release deserves to be current after such a long development cycle, at least
with respect to the English docs. Translations can then be added to the minor
releases.

Hi,

If you speak french, you can probably inspire from the Floss Manual here :
http://fr.flossmanuals.net/Scribus/Introduction
It's licenced CC-by-sa and GPL v2.

best regards
