Summary | 0010169: Snap guidelines to closest point under mouse
Description | It would be quite nice feature if scribus could snap ruler-dragged guidelines to a frame/shape's nearest point (such are start and end point of an line). That would really improve work precision, I believe!

i'm not sure if it's a (very) good idea... too much snapping as soon as you have complex objects around... i think of the case where i have created some shapes and frames and now i want to add a guide to align them exactly... it won't be a nice experience... i wonder if creating guides based on the current selected item wouldn't be a better solution... |
If you use Inkscape, you'll nothing is wrong with this feature. Although, one thing is worth noting - snapping should be triggered by proximity in screen pixels, not real world units. The more you zoom in, better the precision. |
...Especially if you have some kind of traced bitmap under mouse pointer - yes! But, universal solution to this problem is to temporary turn off snapping by picking menu item or introducing keyboard modifier for turning off snapping (Inkscape's SHIFT use). I wouldn't like your object->guides solution because it'll mean creating 4 guides at a time. |
and the other way round? pressing shift would enable object snapping... |
I do it on my branch |

Great! :) Too bad it doesn't work for guide creation. One more thing, and this one has really everything to do with GUI, notice how guide jumps around snapping point if you move mouse up/down/left/right. It snaps, but UI is really misleading. I had to zoom in completely to see what's happening and be sure everything is all-right. |
I don't understand how do you want it works for guide creation as you need to set a value and you doesn't use your mousse. I fix the other issue. It may happen that you have always a little jumps but to change this, we will need to redo the m_canvas class. It appear(s/ed) because we are using integer instead of floating number. |
I'm talking about guides creation by dragging guide from rulers. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. |
I didn't know we can create a guide by this way but I am testing it now and it works even for creation for me ... |

Upped the current behavior animated gif and why this feature would be useful. See guides-snapping-to-objects.gif Edit: the gif also shows how unfriendly zooming is in OSX on laptop trackpad 0012078 |
