Summary | 0011116: PDF open problems with image management
Description | Opening PDF is a powerfull ability to edit other DTP tools produced document. However well functionnal, it is as is restricted to short documents or with documents with very few images since all imported images are created inline. The memory limit seems to be quickly reached, producing unexpected behaviours. I reached it with a 2 pages full of little images document. BTW, no error message is produced. Maybe the inline images memory-use can be improved ? I'm not sure what is the best way to cope with this problem. A powerfull feature would be to propose an option when opening a PDF, so as to create outside images instead of creating inline images. These images would be created in a temporary folder, or in a user-defined folder. It would enable to open and work with a new range of PDFs. Another option would be to enable to select page numbers to be imported : dont open all pages but only a selection of pages (user can however fake this feature using some outside tool to explode a PDF into multiple files)

I uploaded a test PDF file : a 2 pages PDF full of little images, produced using Adobe In Design. |

This is a general problem to images not only inline images. The reason is that an inline images isn't very different to normal images. The only difference is that an inline image is stored under a generated name in your temp disk space. Memory needs are the same for normal images and inline images. But at least i found one limiting factor, on some systems the number of temporary files seems to be limited to 256 files. P.S thanks for uploading that sample doc, with it i was able to fix some other bugs in the PDF importer. :-) |

Thanks you for caring this issue. Things have evolved with PDF import and now we can now choose which page to import. That's great ! But it looks like a bug has since lurked in the image import : see the new behaviour and result of importing the same uploaded PDF example : imported image scale seem to be slightly too small. |

Have fixed now the limit of 256 temporary files. |
