Summary | 0012455: [Barcode] Default EAN13 number
Description | When creating a EAN13 barcode, a default EAN appears without notice : 9781860742712. Its troubling because there is no way to guess where it comes from. Did i allready paste my EAN ? Do I have to and overwrite this one ? Beside this book is not related to scribus (http://www.alibris.co.uk/search/books/isbn/9781860742712) so its a bit strange to label it here.

confirmed on 10.8.5 r19300 it's confusing |
Check in barcodegenerator.cpp,.. map["EAN-13"] = BarcodeType("ean13", "9781860742712", tr("12 or 13 digits"), "[0-9]{12,13}"); No idea why this was chosen. Please suggest new defaults. |
When there is a default value because some requirement, there could be a warning (red text) saying "default value - type yours", that would disappear once value is edited MrB At least you could choose Scribus book EAN as default value... |
Reminder sent to: cbradney Does this stay here or move to: (1.5.1svn or 1.6 milestone)? |
following recent commit, Scribus book EAN is now the default value. It is kindof a funny easteregg and more meaningfull, but the usability issue is still here. |
bump to 1.5.1 |
Just bumping this since barcode functionality was updated recently |
TerryBurton, any suggestions ? |
Actually, this bug is not an issue anymore. The default EAN-13 that comes up is a Lana Del Ray poster: https://www.barcodelookup.com/2112345678900 and a Heavy metal band http://www.alibris.co.uk/search/books/isbn/2112345678900 |

Marking resolved for now. |

The current defaults for the supply chain barcodes (EANs, UPCs, ISBN, etc.) are chosen from number ranges allocated for internal use or straight from examples given in the specifications. As such they do not clash with any number that might be in legitimate open use. Perhaps we could amend the plugin to display disclaimers for supply chain symbols in the same way that my online generator does? http://www.terryburton.co.uk/barcodewriter/generator/ Or something less formal sounding maybe? You might even grey out the OK button until the default is replaced with something else. That said, even though my online barcode generator displays disclaimers in legalese and friendly text both before and after generating an example image, then furthermore prevents users from actually downloading such an image (even by right-clicking -> Save Image As, etc.) there are still users who are determined to ignore all these measures and use the examples anyway - presumably by cropping a screenshot - as you have found in the quoted links. |

So do we want to amend the plugin to display disclaimers for supply chain symbols? |

bump |

This decision is one for the Team and if disclaimers are deemed necessary then implementation is mostly GUI design work - not something I'm likely to do myself. Perhaps one of the Oman contributors or a supporter such as yourself may be interested in providing mockups to help prompt discussion on the best way forward. |
