Steps To Reproduce | Step by step to reproduce: 1) restart Scribus 2) "CTRL + N" to create a new document 3) "T" to switch to the Text Frame tool 4) click and drag over the page to create a text frame 5) with the text frame selected, go to: (main menu) "Insert > Sample Text..." 6) click "OK" 7) "CTRL + W" in order to close the document without saving now repeat steps 2-6: 2) "CTRL + N" to create a new document 3) "T" to switch to the Text Frame tool 4) click and drag over the page to create a text frame 5) with the text frame selected, go to: (main menu) "Insert > Sample Text..." (notice that the textarea of the dialog box is blank) 6) click "OK"
Additional Information | Actual Results: Scribus crash. Expected Results: the text frame should be filled with the sample text. (Not sure if it could be somewhat related to this fixed bug: 0012367 )

Does work here without crash with 1.5.3svn and Ubuntu 16.04 |
Hi, I'm not a developer however here in attachment is a text file with the gdb output of the crash. I'm not sure if it's a good/valid backtrace since it's pretty much gibberish to me. If someone is looking into this issue and needs further informations, please let me know and I'll try to get back to. Thanks |

Maybe the reason that I do have no crash is that the problem is already fixed in 1.5.3svn? You can try packet scribus-trunk from "Daily Ubuntu packages" ppa:scribus/ppa. The only problem is that the repository there for Ubuntu 14.04 is out of date. You have to upgrade to 16.04 first. |
Hi mauder, I'm not ready to upgrade Ubuntu yet so I can't confirm that, sorry. Thanks anyway for the hint |
I cannot reproduce this, neither on Windows, nor in Linux Mint 17.3, not in Ubuntu 16.04. |
I can reproduce r21360; Linux Mint 17.3 (Ubuntu 14.04) I cannot reproduce this r21413; Linux Mint 18 Quote: ppa:scribus/ppa (https://launchpad.net/~scribus/+archive/ubuntu/ppa) "scribus-trunk is not updated anymore in 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr due to a too old Qt, please upgrade your system to a newer Ubuntu release (suggested: 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus)." |
Thanks. It's the Linux AppImage "scribus-1.5.2-linux-x86_64.AppImage" (2016-05-16), by the way. |
I can't reproduce on Manjaro Linux 16.10 Scribus 1.5.3svn r21500 Question: I see that after Sample Text is chosen a small hyphenation dialog opens up. How does one trigger that to occur ? |
@mvow would you mind retesting the latest svn? do you know ho to build from source ? |
>> Question: I see that after Sample Text is chosen a small hyphenation dialog opens up. How does one trigger that to occur ? That can happen if you have both "hyphenation suggestions" and "Hyphenate Text Automatically during typing" options enable in hyphenation preferences. |
@Kunda I'm sorry, I can't make enough room on my disk right now and I'm not ready to upgrade Ubuntu. If the issue has disappeared in newer versions please, feel free to close this report. Thanks. |
@FirasH can you take a stab at reproducing this? |
I cannot reproduce the issue with 1.5.2 and 1.5.3.svn. Are you sure you reported everything in the Steps? |
@FirasH I think so. A video example for the steps in attachment. For any informations please let me know. Thanks |
Weird. @mvow I still can't reproduce (using 1.5.3svn r21681 Manjaro 16.10 Qt 5.7) Maybe you can try testing on a temporarily generated appimage for 1.5.3svn I created: https://transfer.sh/FsFaW/scribus-git269f1e9-glibc2.14-x86-64.appimage |
@Kunda Hi and thank you very much for the link you provided to the 1.5.3svn appimage. Unfortunately, it seems that besides with the 1.5.2 also with the 1.5.3svn version, fresh configurations, I get the same message "Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault" (GDB report and new video example in attachment). Testing on on Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS - unity 7.2.6 - GeForce 9800 GT NVIDIA Driver Version: 340.98 2016-12-28_02_Scribus_1.5.3.svn_fresh-prefs_Text-frame-sample-text-crash_GDB.txt (2,388 bytes)

mvow, thanks for your great bug reporting and promptness. Still working to understand the problem. BTW, what version of Qt does Scribus say you are running ? |
@Kunda Thanks. It says it's Qt version 5.7.0 (main menu > Help > About Qt) |
(that's with Scribus 1.5.3svn appimage) |
