probably related to 0016876 .

there is a mismatch in the fontconfig versions.

sadly, still no clear idea how to solve this...

I think you'll find Debian Testing does the same. So people migrating to new major releases with this issue will be coming down the road pretty soon.

@james: the problem is that -- as long as we don't understand why the issue happens -- if i modify the appimage in the way suggested in the other ticket, there is some risk that it will then work with newer versions of fontconfig but not with the older ones... which is not that nice.

Fair enough. I don't want to proscribe a supposedly correct action here. This is not my project and I don't know the details about what's going on either. My point is just to say, the combined userbase of Debian and Ubuntu is pretty large. So digging into this and seeking resolution - especially before Ubuntu 24.04 is released - is probably warranted. I use Scribus, but I'm not hurting here. So please don't feel like I'm making a big stink.

i've put in 0016876 a "solution": just delete the ~./fontconfig-scribus directory.

i can put a notice about this in the place where i provide the direct links to the "nightly" appimage.

We will be releasing 1.6 - the standard installation process for apps in Debian/Ubuntu should then be used, not app images which are clearly part of a broken system. Nothing in these errors actually relates to Scribus code itself.

as far as i can tell, none of scribus or appimage are the culprits here.
