Summary0007689: Hebrew Rendered in Wrong Direction
DescriptionInserting/Importing Hebrew (UTF8) from a text file works as expected in that it is rendered in the correct direction (right-to-left) in the text frame. However, when the Text Frame is viewed outside the Story Editor the Hebrew is rendered in the wrong direction (left-to-right). Inserting Unicode control characters to override the directionality of the text do NOT resolve the issue. I have had to insert Hebrew text in reverse to get it to render correctly. This is only practical for small sections (less than one line) as the directionality of the text would logically cause problems with word/line wrapping.
Steps To Reproduce(1) Create a text frame in a document...
(2) Insert some English text (Latin characters) this could be Lorem Ipsum...
(3) Now insert Hebrew characters into the Story Editor...
(4) Note that the directionality of the text is correct in all cases within the Story Editor proper...
(5) Update the text frame and exit the story editor...
(6) Note that the Hebrew words are backwards. If you cannot read Hebrew, just note the difference in the letter ordering in the text frame vs the Story Editor...
(7) Export the text to PDF, and note the Hebrew directionality persists in the PDF document as well...
Additional InformationI have only tried simple UTF-8 Hebrew text without nikkud (vowel points) or nigunim (Cantillation marks). That is, the characters in question are not Unicode Composites (multiple code-points rendered in the same character cell as one character). I can provide sample files if required. I followed the instructions on the Scribus Wiki for installing Scribus 1.3.5-SVN on an Ubuntu machine.

This is a duplicate of issue 0001364. Currently non latin languages text layout is basically not supported. The "R" button in the properties palette text tab provide a way to *approximate* right to left writing, but the result is not perfect.
