Summary | 0008287: Text overflow in Text Frames even when text's Minimum Bounding Box is smaller than Frame
Description | This is a usability issue. The current implementation of Text Frames in Scribus in some cases requires the Text Frame to be considerably bigger than the actual rendered text therein. For example if I have a text with a large typeface of 120pt, the vertical height of the Text Frame needs to be maybe 240pt high in order for Scribus to display the text. Scribus also seems to require extra space after the text. So if the text itself is 120pt high and 250pt wide, the Text Frame needs maybe to be at least some 240pt x 350pt big. If it is made smaller, Scribus generates a "Text Overflow error" and no longer displays the text. Why is this? I would expect Scribus to honour the Minimum Bounding Box (MBB) as the minimum allowable size of the Text Frame, before generating a Text Overflow. The need to make a text frame far bigger than the actual text, poses all kinds of issues with overlapping frames and alignment... It does seem Scribus could use some serious improvement in this area. Having a text frame respecting the Minimum Bounding Box around a text would be really helpful, especially for large typefaces. The current implementation makes using the Align and Distribute tools in some cases virtually impossible, especially with large typeface, "header" style texts. A real loss, as these tools are a vital ingredient of DTP or any layouting work in any program for that matter. It would also be very usefull if there was an automatic "FIT" button to have the Text Frame fit to the MBB (based on line-length determined by user entered linebreaks in the Story Editor, or simply the length of the line if it is just a single sentence), or automatically stretch with the MBB if the text is edited.
Steps To Reproduce | Create a large text frame, add a short text (e.g. "Test"), set typeface to some large (e.g. 150pt) size and try to resize the Text Frame to the MBB size of the text, it is not possible.

Duplicate of issue 0003332 |

Sorry JGhali to duplicate post an issue, and now to re-open it. But your closing of the issue raised some additional questions that need answering: - You closed and set the status to "Resolved", but neither in mine, nor in any of the related issues, is the "Fixed in Version" data-field filled out. So, if the issue IS truly fixed, in which, possibly future, version is it? I have now downloaded and installed version 1.3.5 RC3 but this still has the same behaviour... -I noticed you reported with the related issue 0007968, that relates to version 1.3.5: "This is a duplicate of issue 0003332. Scribus currently requires that space available at the bottom of the frame be at least the font descent." So does this mean the issue is "fixed"/"resolved" in the sense that you have explained the behaviour, but that in fact, we should just accept it as "per-design"?... ;-( It would be a rather unsatisfactory "fix" for many, not just me. Can you elaborate a bit more on the issue and if there have actually been real changes to deal with this issue, as it obviously is not yet resolved to what many people would expect in the latest 1.3.5 RC3 version?? I now also see that if I add subscript and use the J or Y character, which have the longest downward "tail", that that actually explains the extra required space beneath the characters, consistent with your explanation about "font descent", but that still is not similar to fitting to the actual Minimum Bounding Box (MBB) of the text. If there are no subscripts, or J,Y,G characters with font descent, the box could be allowed to be smaller. So in my opinion, it should be looking at the real rendered text to determine overflow and when to no longer display text. Marco |

>>You closed and set the status to "Resolved" Yes i resolved it as a *duplicate* see "Resolution" >> So does this mean the issue is "fixed"/"resolved" No, this simply mean this issue is a duplicate of another issue |

OK, fair enough. I had misinterpreted the "Closed" and "Resolution" status. Let's see what future versions of Scribus may bring in this respect, although the open "Resolution" status of the original 3332 issue since 2005 does give me the slight feeling it is on very low priority schedule... but it might be some hard to tackle issue. Thanks for getting back on this. |
