Summary | 0009869: When selecting more frames (text and image) in scribus, it crashes and linux re-initialises
Description | When I'm working, I'm always listening to music through Rhythmbox, and have some chat program (i.e. Pidgin) open for communication. Until now, I've always been working in documents with max. 4 pages (A4). When I resize a text frame, the music starts clicking. When I rearrange text frames, the same thing happens. And if I try to select more than two frames, it will crash before I release the mouse button. Somehow I managed to do it once, though. I have a pretty modern AMD motherboard with dual core, 64 bit. My graphics card is a pretty new ATI card. I have no issues with other programs than Scribus. I seems like a memory overflow. I've tried to prioritise Sribus on memory usage, but it didn't seem to work out.
Steps To Reproduce | Select text frame. Move it. The music hangs very short instances (crackles). Select more frames. When selecting, Scribus crashes. Linux logs out user session, to prevent system fault.

I just tried to reproduce it. I zoomed out to full view (6 pages, A4). I started up the document and selected a page full of text frames (10 in total, I guess). I managed to get them selected in one time. I managed to move them to last page. Then to page 5. I then deselected. Zoomed in on page 5 and selected the frames again. Then the very same type of crash was reproduced. Maybe it happens after a few actions have been made. Could it be that my previous actions are saved in some sort of buffer? And this buffer overflowed when I did my zoomed in selection action? See this kern.log again: Mar 22 14:51:20 Huiskat kernel: [15402.682752] Assertion failed in ../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_evergreen.c at line: 64 Mar 22 14:51:21 Huiskat kernel: [15403.524359] [fglrx] IRQ 24 Disabled Mar 22 14:51:23 Huiskat kernel: [15404.947981] [fglrx] Could not enable MSI; System prevented initialization Mar 22 14:51:23 Huiskat kernel: [15404.948766] [fglrx] Firegl kernel thread PID: 5522 Mar 22 14:51:23 Huiskat kernel: [15404.949072] [fglrx] IRQ 24 Enabled Mar 22 14:51:23 Huiskat kernel: [15405.152783] [fglrx] Gart USWC size:472 M. You have other problems apart from Scribus ones. Scribus should not be the primary cause any of this - please look to updates for kernels, graphics drivers, etc. |
Note, none of that log mentions Scribus at all.. only audio and kernel related issues |
True, but it solely occurs when performing this action in Scribus. That's why I'm thinking it has to do with Scribus. I'm working in other memory absorbing programs, too, like Blender or Ardour. Maybe it's connect to the create circle crash I read about elsewhere? |
The circle crash relates to Mac OSX only AFAIK |
Please provide a gdb backtrace for the crash if possible. |
Sadly, either it didn't work or I didn't understand. This GDB was configured as "x86_64-linux-gnu". For bug reporting instructions, please see: <http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/bugs/>... Reading symbols from /usr/bin/scribus...(no debugging symbols found)...done. I hoped something would happen if the crash occurred again. I turned off all sound effects and other programs that use sound drivers and tried to select more text frames. The crash occurred again, but it doesn't show up in GDB backtrace. |
This time, without any sound playing and after a fresh restart, kern.log gives the same log messages, now including: ecryptfs_read_and_validate_header_region: Error reading header region; rc = [-4] Should I be checking another log file perhaps? Loads of thanks for helping me out anyway, if it comes down to bug issueing, I am more or less a newbie... |
Your last error relates to other things.. ie ecryptfs at least.. see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ecryptfs-utils/+bug/372014 as a reference. Do you have disk space issues? swap space issues? |
None of the above. I tried out a few things, just to see what the problem could be. When I uninstalled the FGLRX driver from ATI/RADEON, the problem was solved. So it means that I have to switch off the 3D acceleration before working with Scribus. Which isn't really my kind of idea about working on a computer. Anyway, guess that's the solution to my problem. Guess I have to go on the lookout to another program alike Scribus? |
Please understand, Scribus should not be able to cause this.. it is simply exposing problems in the underlying system. We do not have other reports of this from users of all sorts of linux distributions. Perhaps you could try a live CD from Ubuntu or OpenSuse or another distro. |
